Subject: I've twice been begged to copy a dress of mine for someone in another country, when I started dressmaking many years ago. I did so, (more inside)

In reply to: Deborah 's message, "Sorry, my mistaker, here is the other dress - http://www.dance-again.com/X1151c.html" on Wednesday, January 30, 02:41:41pm

In the first case I changed colours and a few other details, but I was horrified to be sent a photo of the two dresses on the same podium a couple of years later when they'd both been resold.

In the second case, I made a reasonably similar dress (much less similar than the examples posted here though), only to have the buyer turn round and send me a very unpleasant email, objecting to having seen a photo of an almost-twin dress after a year or more, when she'd forgotten she asked me to copy the other dress of mine!

Now I am really careful to find a balance between everyone wanting to pay as little as possible, but also wanting a unique dress.

Quite different though, and unjustifiable in my opinion, to copy another dressmaker's dress.

They both say they are Elevation dresses. So Elevation made 2 of the same dress. Not exactly a "copycat" issue but BN charging "one of a kind" prices. (NT)LynnOHFriday, February 01, 11:32:35am
