I think this is a great way to explain it! In my experience the level of symptoms can fluctuate pretty quickly. I went from having only a variety of skin symptoms and no regular meds to several asthma-like attacks a day and daily allergy medication in a 2-3 month period after moving into an apartment with latex carpet padding. We realized we also had a latex foam stuffed couch that I was spending a lot of time on when not feeling well... We threw out the couch and moved to a place with wood floors (well, 1 room had carpet and we covered it with heavy plastic sheeting). Within a week I was symptom-free except for when going back to the old place to pack and clean - within a couple weeks was off the meds (back to over-the-counter for isolated reactions only). I have been largely reaction-free for a few years now.
So yes, it can escalate quickly but can also go back the other way when the triggers are identified and exposure is reduced.
