Disabled Dancers

If you had a child who was physically disabled, but wanted to dance, would you let them? What about competing even if the child couldn't point their toes or turn their feet out as is required? Would you speak to your child's teacher about if the judges should be informed of your child's handicap? Do you think judges should be informed of such things or is it being unfair to the able-bodied dancers? Thanks for your thoughts.

It really depends on the degree of disability, and the Irish dance school. Some schools are so competitive that even non disabled kids are pushed to their limits. Some teachers would be fine with a disabled child in the class, but not with him or her competing. So, -- a mom, 12:36:59 03/27/02 Wed

My daughter is not disabled, but has not fared well in the competitive side of irish dancing. We do very few feisanna as a result. However, she loves dancing and goes to every performance the teacher invites her to. She has also competed in teams, so there are plenty of opportunities for all dancers. Encourage her to give it a try. My daughter was extremely shy and it has done wonders for her self-esteem. The exercise is great as well. Good luck to her. (NT) -- x, 05:18:51 03/28/02 Thu

I think *AnotherMom* has put it very well. Similarly the level of competitiveness is very variable in my kids' school ie some kids are at Oireachtas level and some never go to a feis at all. In fact the non-feisers are in the majority. All kids get the chance to do exhibitions if they want.
