While I am the Irish Dancer in my family (my daughter is only 4 months old)I have quite a bit of experience in this area. I am a ballet teacher who has taught physically and intellectually challenged students of dance with a good measure of success. Don't sell these kids short! I grew up in a home with a physically challenged brother and learned that strength of spirit is far more important than strength of body. Whether it be in the "Special Child" competetion or in the regular age groups, a child will have a positive experience if he or she is treated with respect and support by parents, teachers and classmates. If the child truly wishes to compete, he or she should be given the opportunity and support. To tell the child that she can't compete like "regular" kids can be more harmful than helpful. As a parent, you need to nurture the spirit of your child and help her work past her physical limitations. Be careful to support and not push, though. The decision to compete should always be the dancer's, not the teacher's or parent's. And that is not only for challenged kids.
