It took my 10 year old almost 9 months to feel confident enough to compete in hardshoe. She still HATES it, because it is different. She started to compete in hardshoe five months ago and finally placed in her fast hard jig. She has yet to compete in her hornpipe, even though she knows the steps.
What concerns me is that your daughter is thinking about quitting. When my daughter wanted to quit dancing, because she couldn't figure out hardshoe, I just had to remind her that she LOVES Irish Step Dance. I tried to get her to practice at home, but I just kept reminding her over and over that it didn't really matter how long it took her to learn the steps as long as she still loved to dance, and as long as she was trying her hardest. It does come around. Just tell her to have patience with herself, I reminded my daughter how long it took her to really get 1-2-3's. She has gained the confidence to really try on her hornpipe, and compete in it in the next feis.
