Subject: This is becoming more and more common as some dressmakers have gotten "burned" by people who ordered a dress, then for some reason changed their mind and did not pay the rest of the money that was owed the dressmaker.
In reply to: Need Answers 's message, "Want to buy a Solo Dress-I just found out my daughter can wear a Solo dress and it was suggested that I go to COL they want a $350 deposit and then a another deposit of $600 is that standered with all dress makers to pay almost a $1000 up before receiving your dress?" on 08:17:46 01/23/02 Wed

With solo dresses, you have to remember that the materials themselves are expensive, and the dresses are very labor intensive. Unless the dressmaker has the cash reserves to pay all those costs out of her own pocket, and then hope she is reimbursed, I don't think asking for several payments in advance is at all unreasonable.

  • A deposit up front is reasonable to cover material costs. The rest should be payable when the dress is done and ready to ship. (NT) -- dressmaker, 14:18:43 01/23/02 Wed
