Irish dance is a very expensive habit... we spend about 8 to 10 thousand dollars a year on it! That is not as extreme as you may think, others pay more... but the 5 thousand dollar mark comes quickly. A normal feis, with a minimum amount of spending on our part is $100.00 (I'm talking about feis fees, gas for the car, parent's entry, a pair of socks and food and drink... NOT counting program, hotel, restaurants/fast food, Irish purchases, I could go on and on!)

Try to just dance for the love of dance and not compete… Sara’s idea was sound. It may not be a fair compromise… but she gets to dance and since THAT is your main love – let dancing be your main goal. Who knows what will pop up for you around the corner? But for now set yourself the goal of buying some used hard shoes. Your best bet is to get items second hand... your main school might have a “For Sale” bulletin board. In the meantime, you can practice soft shoe in WalMart ballet shoes… then get your ghillies. One step at a time, parents like to see responsibility, persistence and respect.
