Different companies work in different ways, and though I am not sure how Colors of Ireland is run, I would assume that they have more than one seamstress. I am a seamstress and an artist, and sewing and painting are very similiar in the way that each seamstress or artist have there own technique and style. So maybe the reason different dresses from the same company can be so different in caftsmanship, design and timeliness is due to different people sewing it.
In response to the first message in this string, some seamstresses charge a deposit of 1/2 the total to begin work, so if you really like their dresses, $350 is not bad.
I charge a $100.00 non refundable deposit (which is applied to the dress purchase) just to save your spot on my waiting list. The reason is because I have been burned before. When someone changes their mind, I not only lose their dress, but holding their place often turns other potential clients away because they don't want to wait. So in that sense, a dressmaker can lose on both ends of the deal.
I just thought everyone would like to see a dressmakers point of view.
Good luck to all your dancers!!
