Ooh, oooh, I've read 'em all! Met Elizabeth Moon at Worldcon, and she's a really nice person and a terrific writer. The Vatta series is terrific... Family issues, military SF. I even re-read them once in a while, and I hardly ever re-read. You do want to read them in order, as they do follow the heroine's life quite closely. Her other series are also excellent. The Paksennarion series is also good, but more fantasy than mil-SF, although it Is military (Paks runs away to be a mercenary soldier). As for the Honir Harrington books, they're also excellent - a takeoff on the Hornblower series with a female hero. Like Hornblower, as Honor rises in rank she get less and less direct adventure; by now in the series she's sending people out to do the fighting and they get to be the heroes. But the first half or more of the series is wonderful. Once she becomes an admiral, her part in the series is more home-office and politics than swashbuckling derring-do. And yes, I had to take a couple stabs at that first book. The first time I got bored and quit, but my son convinced me to give it another try. The problem with Weber is the infamous "Weber Info-Dump", where he tries to overload your brain with pages and pages of politics and war tactics. Skim that part, or come back if you need more info further in, just get right to the action, and you'll want to read the whole series.

And if you like military SF, try David Drake's "Hammer's Slammers" series or David Sherman's Marines in Space series, "Star F.I.S.T.": excellently well-written. And Anne McCaffrey's hard SF "Planet Pirates" series ("Sassinak", "Planet Pirates", "Death of Sleep" (probably not in that order)) is also a great read.

Okay, I'll shut up now. You just happened to hit a favorite genre!

[> [> BTW, if you go to Baen Books website, some of these books are available for free download. Much as I hate, as a bookseller, to recommend downloads, the price is right! -- Merry, Tuesday, January 31, 01:16:11pm
