Subject: I have a book question, so where do I go? RBL, of course!

So Brockmann's newest "Born to Darkness" is out from what I understand and I've read a few reviews...

So if you read it, please please consider doing a review for us!

Thanks
Robin (who is undecided about trying it)

[> I finished reading Suz's book just this morning.... (no spoilers, but inside anyway) -- Merry, Tuesday, March 27, 01:28:55pm

and I will say that it's a departure (being futuristic/urban fantasy) while at the same time following the pattern of her other books (SEAL hero!). I'll elaborate a little, without giving anything important away, if I can...

It's set in a not-too-distant future Boston. Seems the recession never went away, just got worse; the government is mostly run by corporations with a tight grip on the profit margins. Public services aren't a priority. If you have a police or fire problem, better hope you can pay for their services when they arrive. If they arrive. Jobs are few and far between, and a living wage is an impossible dream for most average citizens.

There's a new drug on the street, very expensive, which promises eternal youth, self-healing, and other wonderful things. Trouble is, a single dose is instantly addictive - and it runs about $5,000 a dose. The other unfortunate side effect is that at some point almost every addict goes violently, murderously insane. When we meet Mac MacKenzie, she and her cohorts from the Obermeyer Institute are "assisting the police" in capturing such a rogue.

Mac, her team leader Joe, and team partner Diaz are all "Greater-Than"s - people who have the ability to access and use their brain functions more fully than most of the population. This allows them to have telekinesis, telepathy, accelerated healing, and other mental powers, which they use for good, and to find and educate other persons with the same sort of potential.

Shane Laughlin is a blacklisted SEAL, drummed out of the service for refusing to follow orders. He's down to his last nickel, figuratively speaking, and has only two options left: an offer to become a cage fighter, or to join Obermeyer Institute as a Potential, a possibly Greater-Than.

He first becomes involved with Mac, meeting her in a Boston dive where they're both looking for a one-night-stand... but when they connect, they REALLY connect. She leaves him in her dust the next morning, and is completely shocked when he shows up at OI as a "recruit".

From there on, Suz takes us on a roller coaster ride of kidnapping, terror, joy, and a ton of sex. As is usual with her books, there is a gay couple, whose love story develops right along with the straight couples'.

I will be honest with you - and Suz knows me well enough to know I mean nothing bad here - the book got a tad intensive for my sheltered tastes; there are a LOT of love scenes, some fairly explicit. They are, however, an important plot point, so I accept their necessity. You all know me, I'm a great one for the "They moved into the bedroom, closed the door, and... came out the next morning, smiling" thing. But that's just me.

I would say that Suz has done a very good job with this one - action, adventure, fighting, loving, innocents to be rescued, really evil villains to be defeated - but there are some awfully cruel scenes, too. Be prepared for some really nasty bad guys and children-in-danger.

I never assign a rating to books, but... yes, I would recommend it to others, and yes, I would gladly read a sequel. It's satisfyingly science-fiction-y for this SF lover, and there're plenty of love scenes for the romance-lover, too.
