Author: Pamela Clare
Subject: In memory of Judy Rice

Those of you who’ve been with RBL Romantica longest know that I joined RBL before I was an author. Judy Rice was one of the RBL members I met right away. She, along with everyone else here at RBL, was so encouraging to me when my first book sold and then was released. The friendships that started on this board are precious to me.

When I learned Judy was ill, I sent her copies of the newly released 2.0 versions of Surrender and Unlawful Contact because I knew how much she had enjoyed the stories. It wasn’t much, but it made me feel like I was helping her in some small way to deal with the physical and emotional stress of a critical illness. When she got the package, she sent me this email, which still sits in my Inbox.

“Pamela - Thank you so much for the signed copy of the new Surrender - in
addition to being a wonderful author, you are a very dear person. The book
was waiting to greet me when I came home from the hospital - I was in again
for a few days because my white cell count bottomed out and I developed some
sort of an infection - and it made my homecoming extra-sweet. :)

Judy”

Of course, I emailed her right back and told her that I would absolutely send her an ARC of Defiant the moment they arrived. Sadly, so sadly, she passed on before the ARCs were available.

I got them past Monday. Holding one in my hands, I thought of Judy and how I had promised her a copy. I figure wherever she is right now, she gets to read whatever she wants, even before it’s written. That’s my hope anyway.

In the meantime, I decided the best way to remember Judy was to offer a copy of the book to a member of RBL. Judy loved the MacKinnon’s Rangers series. She would have been happy for the winner.

For those of you who are new to the board and don’t know about my books, Defiant is the third book in the MacKinnon’s Rangers series and tells the story of Connor MacKinnon, the youngest of the three MacKinnon brothers.

Here’s the blurb from the back of the book:

Major Connor MacKinnon despises his commander, Lord William Wentworth, beyond all other men. Ordered to rescue Wentworth’s niece after the Shawnee take her captive, he expects Lady Sarah Woodville to be every bit as contemptible as her uncle. Instead, he finds a brave and beautiful lass in desperate peril. But the only way to free Sarah is for Connor to defeat the Shawnee warrior who kidnapped her—and claim her himself.

Torn by tragedy from her sheltered life in London, Lady Sarah is unprepared for the harshness of the frontier—or for the attraction she feels toward Connor. When they reach civilization, however, it is she who must protect him. For if her uncle knew all that Connor had done to save her, he would surely kill him.

But the flames of passion, once kindled, are difficult to deny. As desire transforms into love, Connor will have to defy an empire to keep Sarah at his side.

To be entered in the contest to win Judy’s copy of Defiant, send me an email at pamelaclare at earthlink dot net by April 30. I’ll announce the winner here on the board on May 1.

We miss you, Judy.

[> Oh, gosh! I posted the wrong email! In the email from Judy that I should have posted, she specifically ASKED me for an ARC of DEFIANT. And I said, yes, I would send it to her. So that might not have made much sense there. But thanks, Beaty, for posting this with the photos. And thanks, Linda, Sandra, and Robin for your sweet words. We all miss her. -- P.C.
