Subject: 50 Shades of Gray question - and weekend plans

Okay, so my weekend plans have nothing to do with 50 Shades of Gray - I won't be home enough to get tied up or anything....

I'm going to the wedding of my best friends son, which is quite a drive, but should be fun cuz our other best friend is coming to town for this too. Throw in a little laundry, a golf tourny for the dh, finishing up Explosive Eighteen by Evanovich, and 'voila' - you have a picture of my full weekend.

But my question is: Who has read the 50 Shades of Gray novel and what did you think? I have not gotten it yet but its such a mainstream phenom now that I'm thinking about it. I have read reviews that say it isn't romance, it is straight erotica, and I like a little relationship in my novels, not just straight sex.

So, if you have read it and have an opinion, I'd love to hear it. You can put your reply inside or email me directly if shy ;)

What is everyone else doing this weekend?

[> I read it. I found it torturous to read, and I cannot fathom WHY so many thought it was good. Sure there's sex in it - but I've read LOTS better. The writing is in first person and it can be very "childish". I did find a LOT of what I would call "stealing" from other novels. The guy is a billionaire, but HE is the one with "issues" from a horrible past (sound familiar?). The ONLY "real" plot IMHO is his "problem". I did buy book 2 & 3 and I cannot seem to PROGRESS beyond the first few chapters of book 2. It's really your call. But I think I've read better. -- Diane, Sunday, May 06, 10:43:53am

[> Yes, I've read it! I was going to discuss it here, but realized I might spoil it for some, so more inside! :-) -- Ricci, Sunday, May 06, 12:44:29pm

I found it almost Gothic in places. He's seriously tortured by a horrific past, she is, as someone said, innocent, young and slightly childlike. As I said, there is an almost Bronte -ish feel to it - complete with controlling behavior (outside the bedroom), irrational fears and a virginal heroine.

I've read all 3 and I must say it turns into more of a suspense toward the end. I found that the plot is a bit sketchy, but does develop more in the subsequent books.

My main issue was believability - I find it hard to believe that a twenty one year old girl would have the emotional maturity to handle someone quite as Fifty Shades as Christian, and incidentally, like Ana, I find it hard to believe that he would just abandon his lifestyle for her like that.

All in all, I'm glad I read it - It certainly offers a very frank insight into the world of BDSM, as well as, I think the repercussions of child abuse in a manner that I've never considered. Would I put it on my all time favorite list? No, but worth the read, noneltheless.

[> I read it not even realizing it had become popular. It was ok. Found the same issues described above, but was readable. I just don't get why it's such a big deal. I also felt like there are so many better books out there. Eh. Halfway through the 3rd now. Mostly just reading it to finish all the loose threads (my brain hurts me if I don't). -- Jolene, Wednesday, May 09, 05:46:27pm
