I sticked a piece of foam under the thumb rest. Despite that the weight of the sax still hurt my thumb at the joint where it joins the palm. When it hurts too much, I just rest the bell on the carrying case or just anything of suitable height.
I find a neckstrap of little help with a soprano.

開始時的確係幾痛,甚至承受唔住,不過耐左就可以習慣,而家有D Soprano 都有吊帶,應該唔成問題

As I think it should be the angle's problems. You may see Kenny G play the stlye that is not down side to floor. It should be straight forward and the thrumb hook is not really hook the soprano. I think the angle should be more than 55" degree from your body. Don't play that like clarinet. Hope you may understand what I mean.
