Jazzer,

Basically agreed with your comment on Mark VI, whilst I just want to tell you that the tone of regular model is almost the same as the normal reference model. I've tried both Hummingbird models in Tokyo last month. I used my own soloist C* mouthpiece to test them. The collector model could give me a feel of vintage sax. I think both collector / regular models are good sax.

Regards,

Hi Beg. This is great you can try both regular and collector hummingbird model. In your opinion, does collector model sound much better than regular model, or about the same? How collector model looks much different?

I think the sound of collector model is darker than regular model. Maybe because Selmer used the “honey gold” lacquer for this collector edition (or maybe because of my soloist mouthpiece…. I guess it might be better if we use the Super Session mouthpiece bundled with this sax.). As told by the salesperson, Selmer invented this lacquer to mirror the one they used for Balance Action and Mark VI series. From the collector point of view, the collector edition is sure a good choice as the engravings are very beautiful. The bird and flowers engraved under the collector model are more precise & detail than the regular model.

Please find below link to some photos of regular hummingbird model:

p.s. the salesperson told me that the next collector series would be based on series III tenor. Just donno who / which continent Selmer would tribute to.

Acker Bill(?) once told Benny Goodman not to be obsessed on the instrument and playing techniques and focus instead on music.

Time to rethink?

Mr Mark VI. Better instrument does enhance a player's ability. I started with a sh_t beginner saxophone and quickily came to a point of little improvement (and I though was that was all I could do), then I decided to buy a pro vintage horn and that has improved my ability to play beyond my dreams. I have come to this situation three times already and have wished I should have started with a Selmer right from the beginning! (But then, I won't separate sh_t from Chocolate, right?)

supersax,

I can hardly agree with what you say...not offencing...

I think any reasonable student sax, without leaks, plays in tune, can be played great....I once felt in love with playing Yamaha YAS100....I think student models offers different sound from professional ones.......

I got a Mark VI, but in my exam not very long ago, I used my Series II alto......although I thought to use Mark VI before, I couldnt as it is still in repairing...and I still make a nice sound out..

I think this all depends on how long and well that you get on with the particular sax.....and also the openness of the sound increases as you spend more time with the sax...

I just sold a YAS32, a superb sax...plays not a cent worse than my Series II alto....

I test this alto at Tom Lee few days ago. It had a red mark selmer. It like the popular reference 54 alto.Just add a small bird on the body!
