There's really nothing you can do. Stuffing stuff in the bell is totally idiotic and useless in terms of getting any progress done in a practising session. The whole point of practising is to get yourself familiar with the sound of the saxophone, as well as controlling it. Now if one can think logically, having external objects placed in the bell would definitely affect the intonation and the air flow of the instrument, you would feel WAY different by doing that. The best solution is to practise somewhere else if your home really does not permit that level of "noise" during your practise session. You are suppose to blow and listen when you practise, that's how you get a better sense of good intonation and air-control technique.

I hope your teacher didn't agree with you that you should put a pair of socks in the bell while practising, if he really does, get another teacher.

Has it ever cross any of your minds that part of the problem is in the loudness of the sax, of the practice.

I was thinking if you can play it softly, or may be, just not too loud, you won't have so much of a problem. The trouble is, of course, we cannot play softly and still get good intonation, good tone/sound, breath control and techniques.....etc.

But what if the music/dynamics requires that it be played softly? We cannot do it! It is way easier to play sax loudly than to play it softly, almost impossible! The control required is incredible.

Now if some day we are so good at it that we can play the sax at whatever dynamics/loudness we like any time we want to. We are socialable at home, to our neighbours, to anyone around us just like the youngster practicing violin next door. People can hear that you are playing the sax but its not too loud or annoying...........

Think about it.

I was in this master class a while ago and the person told me that if you can play as soft as possible, with the same level of control and intonation, you actually get more control and volume when you play loud, like when you are at a gig.

Just a random thought, I try to play as soft as I can manage when I practise, and I do see the improvements in my playing.
