Subject: How do you practice at home

I live in a private estate on Hong Kong Island. I practice daily and I get complaints daily from my family (the noise, the music, the poor skills, poor sound....etc).

I get daily persistent warnings starting at 10 pm, curfew at 11pm. I have thought about using electric and a headphone but some how didn't like the idea. It is not natural and not always feasible......

My neigbours, all my neighbours on the same floor, above and below, play music. They play low and for long periods night after night. In fact, one(two?) of them played real loud flute and piano way past midnight last night. Incredible, huh? I make it a point to let my family hear them play and I was laughing. I won't comment on his/her skills (Oh well, may be....surely I play better than they do).

Now how do you practice at home?

Close all windows and doors.
Siwtch on Air-conditioning.
Advise family to watch TV (with lound sound) at dinning room.
It's a matter of time. After several months and your skill will be improved. Then your family will appreciate your "Music".

I feel your pain man. I live in a house. Even I close all my windows my neighbour (just one) still complain about my playing, granted it is one in the morning. I wised up after that, I don't play past 10 anymore. I am gonna move back to NYC in about a week. I am moving in an apartment. I am really worried. I guess I am just gonna have to stick to my schedule. I don't know about you Mark. But if you get off work at 5. you can arrive home and still have a few hours of solid horn blowing. I know you will have to give up a lot in order to do that. For me it is more important to improve my skill than anything. Or you can do what Sonny did, pick a bridge and blow as hard as you like.

man,
I think...you can tell all those who says you are too loud to shut up! (as long as you are doing it in a reasonable time)
I was in HK 2 yrs before, and I just practise it when I was free to do it...I think somewhere between 9am to 10:30pm is fine.

and regarding the skill, I think long notes are pretty essential so...not much fingering skills in it...but it is still pretty important. I always think that, if a wind player hears others practise long notes, like...for half an hour everyday...he will treat you with appreciation.

I got a complaint once before...but I was doing it around 12:30am in the night...so basically, DO WHAT YOU WANT!
and
NEVER LET OTHERS CONTROL YOU!

Man,

Long tone means that you play a note, keep it as constant and long as possible. It help to build your lung and embouchure muscles.

man,

after long notes, I think you should then serve you family and neighbours with the scale, like...you start with Bb major, then C, C#...just get your finger working and build up you mind for melodies... the desert for them should be the staccato exercise...for me, I play a scale, and tongue each note into 4 beats, 3 beats...get the feel of rythm.

for those who complain you, I am sure they will still do that, but ignore them and tell them you are doing things in a reasonable time...after several days, the will get use to it...hopefully they will miss it if you stop for a few days

Whatever,

I don't know about classical player, but for us, we were taught to do scales in the cycle of 4th. C,F,Bb,Eb....D,E,G. We usually pratice the scale 4 times, once slurred, then legato articulation, Upbeat articulation finally the upbeat accent to get us used to the Jazz articulation.

Also, we would do arpeggios in all keys.

I sometime practice near Wanchai ferry deck/ 新會展...晚上只有少數搭ferry 的途人. In fact I hope one day we saxphone players(At least I'm not qualtified to be called "saxophonist/hornman" right now !)can play a role in spreading the culture of playing music in streets in HK!

Why not.

You can solve your problem for about $100.00. Check the Woodwind & Brasswind web site for El Saxco Silent Bag for Saxophones. It's a sax mute bag that mutes 70% of the sound without affecting the timbre.

Good Luck

Talk is easy..... Is there any so-called sax-lover in Hong Kong really serious in getting together to practise or play.... HA... HA... The answer is already shown in the rate of response (zero).

Never mind. Keep our burning flame inside and let it burns and inflicts everyone as the day will sooner or later come!

Cheers.

Hi, MT,

No need to get upset or frustrated.

Sax is music, an art, a hobby, a passion, a love.

It is nice and exciting to get togather to play. It is just as well having a good time playing at home and enjoying the music/art you creat.

More so if it entertain (or annoy, if you must or if you will) your family, friends, neigbours.

I do it almost everyday.

Hope you had a great time playing wherever it is and you enjoy the music, the art, the passion and love.

Merry X'mas.

Mark,
Thanks for the LECTURE.
I do always enjoy whoever, whenever and wherever I play my sax.
Lucky enough, a real sax lover do call on me to join in for their practice lately. (Thanks T).
Do enjoy your playing at home too.
MT
