Subject: Large Patridge Cochins

Author:
Bo Garrett

Date Posted: 14:07:20 01/26/10 Tue

I am searching for a pair or just a male large partridge cochin. I am working on a project and need the color genetics from the partridge for this. My goal was to have birds ready to display at the 2011 Crossroads Show in Indianapolis but if I am unable to aquire some breeding age partridge I fear I may miss this goal. I have made several inquiries to different breeders but to no avail, if anyone has a very nice spare male this would really do the job since all my f2's are pullets.

Many thanks,

Bo Garrett

This is my 1st year with cochin bantams and besides the fact they're super cute, I liked the extra bonus that they had the ability to brood their own nest. Now I have 3 trying to brood empty nests! What in the world triggered their urge to set an empty nest? Is this typical behavior for cochins? Any ideas how to get them to stop until we're ready for them to do their job for real?

Is the heavy feathering gene associated with outer toes being one joint short and without the toenail? I've seen wheaton and black mottled bantam cochins with a shortened toe on each foot. My roo had great foot feathering with this short toe on each foot and almost all his chicks have similar feet now. As body type was more of a goal, I used him anyway for breeding (no other roo at the time) What has been your experience in the shows?

I live and show on the West Coast and the Cochins that I do the best with are larger.(a little over the standard) I guess my question to all the Cochins experts on this site is How big is to big and to the Judges that read this is there a difference between West coast and East coast birds.

I am wondering if persons who raise exhibition quality cochins have determined that other factors are involved in keeping the comb straight. For instance, have others seen that sunlight (vitamin D), nutrition, exercise/inactivity or any other factors have played a role in keeping the comb straight on their roosters.

Some recently acquired mille fleur cochins have a surprise color on their legs. Its a greenish tint. Checking the standard it says DQ for absence of yellow on the underside of feet. These do have yellow underneath but green on top of foot & up the leg. I have a bad feeling I just learned another life lesson about buying online....

Hi,

Well I am definatley addicted to this breed they are so much fun to raise. And as it is to cold to do much but browse the internet right now I am looking for both eggs, chicks or adult birds. I live outside of Spokane Washington but will travel several hours possibly more for excellent quality live birds but would also love to find some hatching eggs for sale as well. I purchased blue cochins last year and did not actually end up with blue so from what I have read my birds should be recessive for blue. But I am pretty much looking for all colors would also love to know if there are ever any large poultry shows in the pacific northwest area.

Thanks in advance Nicki

I really enjoy the Cochin newsletter that comes with our membership. It is an excellent source of information and a good way of keeping track of events. My compliments to all who make it possible. I could not help but think that we as a club should look at a restricted access website were the newsletter could be viewed by paying members. This could save a huge amount on mailing costs and those fees could be used to make our club better. I know that not all members have internet access but those who do could help the club out by viewing and/or printing the newsletter on line. I know postal savings to Canada and Internationally would be huge.

Howdy everyone, I just got my copy of the news letter this week. Thanks for all the effort putting in together.
I was wondering if anyone had more info on the last article about the gentleman that made the Mille Cochins. I was wondering if there was more to it. If so please contact me. I’d really like to here the entire story.
My father had found someone over there around 10+ years ago that had been working hard on them but he can’t remember who it was or where they were located (it’s bad getting old) :o)

Anyway, if any of you have any info on it please let me know. Thanks, www.JoshsBantams.com

I just wanted to take this opportunity to apologize to the North Central district members for the absence of an article in the recent newsletter. I sent an article, along with the membership update and Fred Abbitt's information, but it did not find its way into the newsletter. Perhaps it was lost in cyberspace. Maybe you can only have 2 articles by the same author in the newsletter! HA! Anyway...I had listed several wins and details from some of the bigger shows in the district. Maybe we can share them next time. Best of luck in your local shows. Matt

I will have bantam cochins available in several colors this fall. I will have brown reds and lots of extra females. They have shaped up nicely this year, and I have culled very hard from about 200 hatched. I will have a few blues, partridge, mottled, barred, and buff columbian, mostly in pairs. These will all be ready around late October. I can ship when weather permits. I will take orders now and reserve for shipment later. Priced according to quality, but know that if they are still in my coop in November they are shaping up nicely. Thanks!

I have 2 extremely nice Black bantam hens(gantt line). I now have a young Mottled bantam Cockerel(unknown line for now) that is coming along nicely.

If he ends up worth breeding I am curious what I would get from the mating. The ladies are currently freeranging with my Dutch flock, so I have never hatched from them. They will be 3 years old in 2010, so I don't expect alot of eggs from the sisters.

So a Mottled Cockerel over Black hens = ?
(1st gen), (2nd gen), etc

I think I know some of it, but would like to hear from breeders with some actual experience.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Guys,

I guess the old adage was right, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket". Last night a pack of skunks got into my bantam partridge cochin pen and killed everything except two hens.

I was wondering what the outcome of a Black cochin male on a partridge cochin female would be? My guess is the F1 group would all be black. When I back cross the F1's to the partridge hens should I get some partridge offspring?

Thanks for your input, Russ

I have had some members request the results of the Ohio National show in Columbus be posted so they can see what occurred. Bob Carrothers judged the cochin bantams. There were 160 cochin bantams shown. The results are as follows:
Blacks (70) BV Maxie/Cindy Chastain Pullet
RV Bill Ziehm Cockerel
Whites (41) BV Maxie/Cindy Chastain Hen
RV Greg/Christy Michael Pullet
Buff (7) BV Tom Roebuck Pullet
RV Don Stephenson Pullet
Blue (16) BV Matt McCammon Hen
RV Matt McCammon Pullet
Mottled (6) BV Matt McCammon Cockerel
RV Mandy Malin Hen
Splash (3) BV Shari McCollough Pullet
RV Shari McCollough Pullet
Partridge (5)BV Bill Riebold Pullet
RV Bill Riebold Cockerel
Barred (11) BV Tom Roebuck Cock
RV Tom Roebuck Cock
Red (1) BV Non member Pullet

BB was the black pullet by Maxie Chastain. She was also Champion Featherleg and Reserve Bantam I believe. RB was the black cockerel by Bill Ziehm. Best AOV cochin was the mottled cockerel shown by Matt McCammon.

In large Fowl the results are as follows:
Black (6) BV William West Reserve Asiatic
RV William West
White (5)BV Kay St. Amour Hen
RV Tom Roebuck Pullet
Buff (10) BV William West Pullet
RV William West Cockerel

The buffs were absolutely amazing birds. I had never seen buffs with such quality of color and type. A nice group of large fowl was shown by all exhibitors.

It was very enjoyable sharing the aisle with all the cochin breeders and those showing. Thanks for the comraderie and the fun times!

For some reason, it seems that I have a lot more mice this year than I have had in years past. I haven't had to do any major "control," with the exception of repeating baitless traps, in many years. This year, for some reason, I just can't keep up.

Does anyone have any remedies for this problem that don't include chemicals/baits/poisons? I have heard different things about "secondary" poisoning of birds and other animlas who eat the nice after they have eaten the bait. Some say that other animals won't be affected because the amount of poison in a dead/dying rodent is negligible, and others say that even a larger breed dog could be killed by secondary poisoning. I don't know what to believe.

If there is anyone who has any experiernce with this problem, I would like any information that any of you could give me.

Thank you.

I have a standard cochin chick who was sold to me as a splash pullet. He said she was almost 5 weeks old when I got her, making her about 9 weeks old now. Personally, I think she is younger than that because I also got a Wyandotte and Orpington at the same time and they are much larger than her. And she is turning out to be blue, not splash, but that is fine.

Any tips on how to verify her sex? She has very, very little comb with no coloring in it. She came with fully feathered wings and legs, but the rest of her was down. Now she is getting feathers on her neck and head and her back. I wish I could post a pic.

Thanks for any help. I really hope she is a she, otherwise we will have to give her away and my daughter will be heartbroken.

I am quite new to this poultry lark but have three fabulous cochins who are great fun and very friendly. Unfortunately two have got mild bumblefoot - which we are treating as per the vets instructions. However someone has mentioned that the reason they have got it is because they don't perch at night when roosting?? They happily use their coop to roost but don't ever want to use the perch in there. They can physically get on it (it's about 6 inches off floor) and if put on it they will stay there but left to their own devices the sleep on the coop floor. Does this sound like normal behaviour for a cochin?

WOW!! what a great showing of cochins we had. I saw some of the most beautiful cochins I have ever seen. I am guessing the total of all the cochins was over 220!

It was great to meet many of my fellow cochin exhibitors,
A great time was had by all!

I would like to thank Shannon Ahlman, Barb&Gerald Church, Ken&Bernita Miller and Debbie Carlson and everybody who was involved in making it such a great cochin national.

Hope to see you all again in the future.

It is my understanding that Lemon Blue is a recognized color variety in Bantams, but I'm really having trouble tracking down any breeders. I'm seeing a lot of "Project Lemon Blue" birds, which I'm not quite sure I understand why if the color is already recognized. Is the color headed toward extinction? If you know of any breeders of true Lemon Blues, please let me know - I'm Googled out!! Thanx so much!

Subject: The Value of an ABA Membership

Author:
Matt Lhamon
[Edit]

Date Posted: 22:29:24 10/08/09 Thu

So what do you get when you join the ABA?
The Following response is from our hardworking, passionate Secretary-Karen Unrath

Dear Prospective ABA Member,

Included in the $20 per year membership ($50 for 3 years -- $250 lifetime)

Annual Yearbook (350-400 pp full of reference material) – show results – annual club business – lots of contact information in ads – educational articles

4 newsletters per year

Postings in the database of wins (if you show and win) and cumulative awards program participation

Up to date news on offerings such as merchandise – Bantam Standard – other educational materials

Our licensed judges actively participate in continuing educational programs

We work cooperatively with the APA/ABA Youth program to generate youth interest in our hobby with the ultimate goal of keeping new young members coming in, and staying with this great hobby.

The feeling of cooperation with other bantam breeders for the purpose of promoting bantam poultry. There is no better feeling than meeting someone in the showhall with an ABA logo on his shirt and sharing information on bantams . These members become lifelong hobby partners and the understanding that we are working together for the betterment of the club is enough to make you understand that we are in the same boat with the same goal and of course some differences along the way, and we all learn from each other.

All these things simply require resources and this is where you can help. By being an ABA member, you are a supporter and believe in the promotion of bantam poultry and the cooperation between breeders that we strive to achieve.

DID you know
The ABA publishes the Bantam Standard and licenses ABA Poultry Judges. We sanction hundreds of shows per year including many fairs. Our Officers, committee heads,, and board of directors are all volunteers who meet twice a year and probably weekly on email to discuss the course of action the ABA as an organization will take.

Your question is one that I get often and quite honestly I am always at a loss of words to explain( although is looks like I made up this time)– because with me – it is part of life – not only because I am the secretary (yes paid a salary – but no commission and rather nominal I might add) – but because the ABA in my opinion is the best $20 investment in the poultry world. It is a way to stay connected to your fellow hobbyists. The yearbook – again and again – is worth the price of membership and when you sit and read it (takes awhile) you will understand that the ABA actively reviews, maintains, and improves its awards programs on a regular basis (within the budget of course and we understand how tight things are for the fellow poultry breeders)

I told one person this: When you sell birds – you may get $5 apiece - $10 a piece – or $50-100 a piece – the difference being quality. Well – who sets the measurement of the quality – some say – the male has a better tail -----says who? The Standard or sometimes the judge? Well – the Standard is either published by the APA or ABA and the judges are most likely licensed that way too. Without these organizations, there is no way to organize the qualifications of a breed or provide quality judging programs for the people who will judge them. Most buyers learn quality in the showroom and they will probably talk or learn some valuable information from an ABA judge at some point in their information gathering stage.

These are some of the reasons that we need the ABA . The ABA is non-profit and vulnerable to this economy as well. We need to continue to attract new hobbyists. I strongly believe that the ABA members are for the most part happy members who want to renew and want to support their ABA. And most of all – they believe in continuing the ABA tradition that was established in 1914. Wow – we have been around for awhile and have every intention of being there for our members in the future.

Whew---------so yes – I am passionate about the ABA and believe EVERYONE should be a member. We can only provide improvements with the help of our members and that means you and your poultry friends – so please consider joining and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

What are the recognized and or standard colors of the Large Cochins? Are there any besides Buff, Black, Blue, Splash and White? I know that you can get them in Barred, golden laced and others but can you show these?
Also it seems that people are now asking for different colors like lemon blues for their splashes and lavenders for their blues. Are these actual recognized colors in the large fowls or just personal preferences from the buyers whom are comparing them to the bantam colors. Thanks as I am getting confused as to what is happening.

I am just starting to get familiar with the various ways a young mille fleur can look as it feathers out and enters its first moult, but I am wondering how long the rest of you keep young stock before you cull. I have had a completely black and white cockerel develop an awesome mille breast and I am now watching some buff columbians start to have white flecks all over. The same with some birds that were once completely gold...still others look like they will never be more than "gold necks" as seen in Belgians???

Also, I though the "hackle black" gene was not desirable in milles, so I am now looking for some guidance as to whether that gene pool should be culled????

Know zip about chickens. Neighbor gave me two buff cochins about 2-3 mo. old. One has real yellow legs/feet and the other has pale legs/feet. The one with yellow feet looks to have had his tail feathers pecked out. Neither has feathers around legs & feet. Qestions: Why the difference in leg/feet color, will the feathers grow back out and will they ever get feathers on legs/feet? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have been working on a brown cochin project since 2004 and this year may have seen the best progress to date. I was only able to hatch out 8, which I think are all pullets, and they all seem to finally have the base brown body color and the black stipling. The hackle and breast feathers are still more orange than red and salmon but progress has been made.
I am keeping records of the matings used and the results of each mating produced. I will publish the complete results when the project is completed so that others may replicate the results and have these large brown beauties to show. I do not think that any are left in existince since the flock of the late Alex Duffy was lost. When Mr. Duffy was showing these brown cochins he was winning asiatic classes with them which is something to be said for a bird of the patterned variety.
When the birds mature I will post pictures to our website and you may see the progress we are making.
Thanks to those who have provided the varieties I have needed to move this project forward (Tom Roebuck & Bill West).

I was looking for someone who had been working with this color and was willing to ship eggs. Most of the silver laced birds I have owned were hatchery birds and barely resembled a cochin bantam. I was curious if someone could shed some light on this color and the genetics that go into it... what color would one cross with to improve type and keep the silver laced color. I am new at this genetics game. I figured if I was going to work on a color I would pick one with vast room for improvement. Thanks in advance!

Hello all, I’m wondering if anyone knows of someone breeding Golden Laced Standards. I’d really like to get into this color but it seems to be quite a rarity. If anyone has any information on some breeders that raise them please let me know.
Thanks.

Hello Fellow Cochin Warriors,

I'm in need of a Golden Laced Cochin male for an new breeding experiment I've been working on. He needs to have pretty good breast lacing for it to work correctly.

I live in Texas so we'll have to ship pretty soon before the weather gets any hotter.

Thanks,
Russ

Thanks!

I have black rooster that has good type but has a black beak and feet.He has good black under colour as well. Could some let me know if he should be used in the breeding pen and to what degree? I know he would pass some of this trait along or would it be 100% of the offspring?

Subject: Remedies for Smothering Chicks?

Hello all. I am wondering if we can compare notes on smothering chicks- it seems like every year I lose a few perfectly healthy chicks to this issue. This year a power outage and a burnt light bulb cost me four good chicks each. To combat the light bulb, I have now resorted to two bulbs in each brooder- a "heat" bulb and a compact florescent. I did some experimenting and found that the chicks start piling immediatly when the light goes out- they don't wait until they are cold. The compact florescent provides a backup without a lot of power useage, and hopefully will hold them over until I discover the other burnt bulb.

I know crowding is an issue, but it seems to me that any time more than 10 chicks are together there is potential for smothering, and it just isn't feasible to raise chicks in groups this small.

Finally, in years past I have had chicks smother quickly when I moved them in boxes. I will soon be moving 200 started chicks on a 30 hour drive- are there any remedies other than small groups?

Thanks for any imput-
Bryant

I have made Silver Tollbunte Cochin Bantams which is a Mottled Silver Laced pattern. I want to make Mottled Golden Laced because it is a spectacular pattern. Here is a link that shows both the silver and gold patterns in the Wyandotte. http://www.chickencolours.com/pagina7.html

Subject: Lacey looking feathers on my cochins?????

Last fall I purchased a few young bantam cochins from a breeder. When I received them, some of them had messed up feathers. I thought maybe they got ruffled in shipping. They looked like they needed to be brushed so they would lay flat. These are mainly the large wing feathers. Now that they are older and still have the lacey looking feathers, I am wondering if this is a breeding fault that I need to cull from my flock. I have a few chicks now from these birds and do see the lacey look in a few of them. Can anyone shed some light on what I have going on in these birds? Note, these are not frizzled feathers. The best word I can come up with is lacey to describe them. I sure would appreciate some education on this. Thanks.
