It is my understanding that Lemon Blue is a recognized color variety in Bantams, but I'm really having trouble tracking down any breeders. I'm seeing a lot of "Project Lemon Blue" birds, which I'm not quite sure I understand why if the color is already recognized. Is the color headed toward extinction? If you know of any breeders of true Lemon Blues, please let me know - I'm Googled out!! Thanx so much!

I will have bantam cochins available in several colors this fall. I will have brown reds and lots of extra females. They have shaped up nicely this year, and I have culled very hard from about 200 hatched. I will have a few blues, partridge, mottled, barred, and buff columbian, mostly in pairs. These will all be ready around late October. I can ship when weather permits. I will take orders now and reserve for shipment later. Priced according to quality, but know that if they are still in my coop in November they are shaping up nicely. Thanks!

Subject: The Value of an ABA Membership

Author:
Matt Lhamon
[Edit]

Date Posted: 22:29:24 10/08/09 Thu

So what do you get when you join the ABA?
The Following response is from our hardworking, passionate Secretary-Karen Unrath

Dear Prospective ABA Member,

Included in the $20 per year membership ($50 for 3 years -- $250 lifetime)

Annual Yearbook (350-400 pp full of reference material) – show results – annual club business – lots of contact information in ads – educational articles

4 newsletters per year

Postings in the database of wins (if you show and win) and cumulative awards program participation

Up to date news on offerings such as merchandise – Bantam Standard – other educational materials

Our licensed judges actively participate in continuing educational programs

We work cooperatively with the APA/ABA Youth program to generate youth interest in our hobby with the ultimate goal of keeping new young members coming in, and staying with this great hobby.

The feeling of cooperation with other bantam breeders for the purpose of promoting bantam poultry. There is no better feeling than meeting someone in the showhall with an ABA logo on his shirt and sharing information on bantams . These members become lifelong hobby partners and the understanding that we are working together for the betterment of the club is enough to make you understand that we are in the same boat with the same goal and of course some differences along the way, and we all learn from each other.

All these things simply require resources and this is where you can help. By being an ABA member, you are a supporter and believe in the promotion of bantam poultry and the cooperation between breeders that we strive to achieve.

DID you know
The ABA publishes the Bantam Standard and licenses ABA Poultry Judges. We sanction hundreds of shows per year including many fairs. Our Officers, committee heads,, and board of directors are all volunteers who meet twice a year and probably weekly on email to discuss the course of action the ABA as an organization will take.

Your question is one that I get often and quite honestly I am always at a loss of words to explain( although is looks like I made up this time)– because with me – it is part of life – not only because I am the secretary (yes paid a salary – but no commission and rather nominal I might add) – but because the ABA in my opinion is the best $20 investment in the poultry world. It is a way to stay connected to your fellow hobbyists. The yearbook – again and again – is worth the price of membership and when you sit and read it (takes awhile) you will understand that the ABA actively reviews, maintains, and improves its awards programs on a regular basis (within the budget of course and we understand how tight things are for the fellow poultry breeders)

I told one person this: When you sell birds – you may get $5 apiece - $10 a piece – or $50-100 a piece – the difference being quality. Well – who sets the measurement of the quality – some say – the male has a better tail -----says who? The Standard or sometimes the judge? Well – the Standard is either published by the APA or ABA and the judges are most likely licensed that way too. Without these organizations, there is no way to organize the qualifications of a breed or provide quality judging programs for the people who will judge them. Most buyers learn quality in the showroom and they will probably talk or learn some valuable information from an ABA judge at some point in their information gathering stage.

These are some of the reasons that we need the ABA . The ABA is non-profit and vulnerable to this economy as well. We need to continue to attract new hobbyists. I strongly believe that the ABA members are for the most part happy members who want to renew and want to support their ABA. And most of all – they believe in continuing the ABA tradition that was established in 1914. Wow – we have been around for awhile and have every intention of being there for our members in the future.

Whew---------so yes – I am passionate about the ABA and believe EVERYONE should be a member. We can only provide improvements with the help of our members and that means you and your poultry friends – so please consider joining and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

I have a standard cochin chick who was sold to me as a splash pullet. He said she was almost 5 weeks old when I got her, making her about 9 weeks old now. Personally, I think she is younger than that because I also got a Wyandotte and Orpington at the same time and they are much larger than her. And she is turning out to be blue, not splash, but that is fine.

Any tips on how to verify her sex? She has very, very little comb with no coloring in it. She came with fully feathered wings and legs, but the rest of her was down. Now she is getting feathers on her neck and head and her back. I wish I could post a pic.

Thanks for any help. I really hope she is a she, otherwise we will have to give her away and my daughter will be heartbroken.

What are the recognized and or standard colors of the Large Cochins? Are there any besides Buff, Black, Blue, Splash and White? I know that you can get them in Barred, golden laced and others but can you show these?
Also it seems that people are now asking for different colors like lemon blues for their splashes and lavenders for their blues. Are these actual recognized colors in the large fowls or just personal preferences from the buyers whom are comparing them to the bantam colors. Thanks as I am getting confused as to what is happening.

I am just starting to get familiar with the various ways a young mille fleur can look as it feathers out and enters its first moult, but I am wondering how long the rest of you keep young stock before you cull. I have had a completely black and white cockerel develop an awesome mille breast and I am now watching some buff columbians start to have white flecks all over. The same with some birds that were once completely gold...still others look like they will never be more than "gold necks" as seen in Belgians???

Also, I though the "hackle black" gene was not desirable in milles, so I am now looking for some guidance as to whether that gene pool should be culled????

Know zip about chickens. Neighbor gave me two buff cochins about 2-3 mo. old. One has real yellow legs/feet and the other has pale legs/feet. The one with yellow feet looks to have had his tail feathers pecked out. Neither has feathers around legs & feet. Qestions: Why the difference in leg/feet color, will the feathers grow back out and will they ever get feathers on legs/feet? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys,

I guess the old adage was right, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket". Last night a pack of skunks got into my bantam partridge cochin pen and killed everything except two hens.

I was wondering what the outcome of a Black cochin male on a partridge cochin female would be? My guess is the F1 group would all be black. When I back cross the F1's to the partridge hens should I get some partridge offspring?

Thanks for your input, Russ

Date Posted: 14:16:43 07/25/09 Sat

I have been working on a brown cochin project since 2004 and this year may have seen the best progress to date. I was only able to hatch out 8, which I think are all pullets, and they all seem to finally have the base brown body color and the black stipling. The hackle and breast feathers are still more orange than red and salmon but progress has been made.
I am keeping records of the matings used and the results of each mating produced. I will publish the complete results when the project is completed so that others may replicate the results and have these large brown beauties to show. I do not think that any are left in existince since the flock of the late Alex Duffy was lost. When Mr. Duffy was showing these brown cochins he was winning asiatic classes with them which is something to be said for a bird of the patterned variety.
When the birds mature I will post pictures to our website and you may see the progress we are making.
Thanks to those who have provided the varieties I have needed to move this project forward (Tom Roebuck & Bill West).

I was looking for someone who had been working with this color and was willing to ship eggs. Most of the silver laced birds I have owned were hatchery birds and barely resembled a cochin bantam. I was curious if someone could shed some light on this color and the genetics that go into it... what color would one cross with to improve type and keep the silver laced color. I am new at this genetics game. I figured if I was going to work on a color I would pick one with vast room for improvement. Thanks in advance!

I'm in need of a Golden Laced Cochin male for an new breeding experiment I've been working on. He needs to have pretty good breast lacing for it to work correctly.

Hello all. I am wondering if we can compare notes on smothering chicks- it seems like every year I lose a few perfectly healthy chicks to this issue. This year a power outage and a burnt light bulb cost me four good chicks each. To combat the light bulb, I have now resorted to two bulbs in each brooder- a "heat" bulb and a compact florescent. I did some experimenting and found that the chicks start piling immediatly when the light goes out- they don't wait until they are cold. The compact florescent provides a backup without a lot of power useage, and hopefully will hold them over until I discover the other burnt bulb.

I know crowding is an issue, but it seems to me that any time more than 10 chicks are together there is potential for smothering, and it just isn't feasible to raise chicks in groups this small.

Finally, in years past I have had chicks smother quickly when I moved them in boxes. I will soon be moving 200 started chicks on a 30 hour drive- are there any remedies other than small groups?

Thanks for any imput-
Bryant

Last fall I purchased a few young bantam cochins from a breeder. When I received them, some of them had messed up feathers. I thought maybe they got ruffled in shipping. They looked like they needed to be brushed so they would lay flat. These are mainly the large wing feathers. Now that they are older and still have the lacey looking feathers, I am wondering if this is a breeding fault that I need to cull from my flock. I have a few chicks now from these birds and do see the lacey look in a few of them. Can anyone shed some light on what I have going on in these birds? Note, these are not frizzled feathers. The best word I can come up with is lacey to describe them. I sure would appreciate some education on this. Thanks.

There are always inquiries on this board from individuals looking for birds and I realize that some people are just looking for any birds and still others are looking for show quality birds. If you are interested in good quality, there is an easy way to determine who might be good people to go to. First, go to the home page of this website. Click on the Master Breeder Points section and look down the list of individuals who have shown birds in the varieties that you are looking for. The people on that list may have birds for sale. If you are looking for good birds, the people with the higher number of points have had the varieties a longer time and have been working on them for a longer period of time. There may be exceptions to the rule but for the most part this is true. Sometimes, members of CI who have gotten out of a particular variety but are still dues paying members, may no longer have the variety but they will know who does. Additionally, there is an officers and directors section on the main web page. The district director from your area may be able to help you locate birds as well. The reason I am posting this is that this website has more information available to it's users than just the forum, however, we all get used to coming to the forum but don't utilize the other resources that can be found here. One other point, try to be specific if you are looking for bantams or large fowl whenever you list a request. I hope this is useful.

Just wanted to see how yall felt about people using your name to sell birds on sites like eggbid. As we all know you can breed very birds together and only get a select few to show. I know they buy the birds and they now belong to them. I just don't like them selling there culls and saying they are from me. How do the rest feel, is this just me or what.

In past years all of my mature cochin bantam breeding birds have been fed an 18% non-medicated chick grower from around July 1 until the next breeding season and then changed to a breeder feed. My local feed store has changed brands and is now selling a 20% starter-grower with amprolium. I can't find it written anywhere that the amprolium would cause any problems for breeder birds. What has been anyone elses experience feeding a feed with amprolium prior to the breeding season.

I also have a lavender project much like what you are doing. I have two different lines of lavender. One of which are 50/50 cross with a lavender dutch. I don't know about the others, they look like hatchery birds. I am breeding both to black. I have about 15 hatched and intend on hatching about 15 more. I hope hatching this many gives me a little bit more to work with.

The percentage is about 1 in 5. I have reserched on the web to finding nothing. I have no diease {all my birds are healthy]but one thing kept coming up. That they may be lacking in riboflavin. Is their some where I can buy and add extra vitamins? They are all eating the same lay mash for the last 3 years! this is upsetting me as unfortunatly I have to put them down. Thanks!!

I am quite new to this poultry lark but have three fabulous cochins who are great fun and very friendly. Unfortunately two have got mild bumblefoot - which we are treating as per the vets instructions. However someone has mentioned that the reason they have got it is because they don't perch at night when roosting?? They happily use their coop to roost but don't ever want to use the perch in there. They can physically get on it (it's about 6 inches off floor) and if put on it they will stay there but left to their own devices the sleep on the coop floor. Does this sound like normal behaviour for a cochin?

I had a mottled pullet mistakenly removed from the show hall. I prefer to say it that way at least. I don't want to think that someone would choose to do this deliberately. She was the last one in the line of mottleds. Beside here was a partridge female and then two splash females. I have made a few calls thanks to show management, and I have some ideas. However, I am asking any fellow exhibitors who may have seen something to e-mail me. Thanks for any assistance. Matt

Hello everybody,

I am a Cochin breeder, and, to cut a long story short, Buffs have always been special to me. I usually receive pictures from all major European shows (which I can post on this forum, if anyone is interested in seeing them). But I am very curious to see the Buffs bred by William West. I have seen a few pictures of his birds, but, since the photo section of Cochins International hasn't been updated for at least 2 years (and that's too bad, by the way), I am asking you: does anyone have pictures of William Best's Buffs? And, in general, if you have nice pictures from the shows, I am sure a lot of people would enjoy seeing them.

Thanks everybody, and good luck with breeding!
Greetings,
Bobo

Many of you have spoken with him over the phone, as he spends a great deal of time on the weekends talking cochin with breeders across the country. Fred is blind, but he can tell a good deal about a cochin using his other senses. He has been blind since his early adult years. Fred doesn't have a lot of family, so if those who know him could send him a get well card, I know he would be so happy. The show season started with a beautiful day in the North Central District. With temps in the 70's and sunshine, 80 bantams and 2 large fowl cochins were shown in Bloomington IN. Blacks and whites led the way, with blues, mottleds, barreds, partridge, birchen, and brown red all shown in impressive quality. Diana Delaney had best of breed cochin and champion feather leg with a black pullet. Reserve of breed bantam was a black male shown by Shari McCollough. Bob Carrothers had best Large Fowl. A nice time was shared by all. The North Central District meet will be held at the Southern Ohio Poultry Club show in Lucasville, OH. I will not be able to attend due to my son's graduation, but I hope many of you continue to make Lucasville a first rate cochin show!

My kids and I raise bantam cochins for show and we recently attended a poultry show where someone was showing standard cochins. THEY ARE GORGEOUS. We absolutely love their fluff. We would like to add these beautiful birds to our show list. If anyone can point us in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time

I have a few trios or pairs of mottled cochin bantams for sale. Priced according to quality, but should average around $75-$100 per trio plus shipping and box. The one trio of barreds is $100 plus shipping. I will ship to most locations as long as weather permits. I will not badger post office if birds are late but alive. These birds were hatched in 08 and are maturing nicely. They will be primed for Spring 09 showing. All trios are unrelated. Please e-mail if interested. Thanks.

I have 5 very pretty Standard Cochin hens that I raised from babies and no roo for them. I am in Texas and would like to find a breeder close by, if possible. If anyone has an extra roo they don't need, contact me please. My girls are just starting to lay, and will be a year old in May. Thanks for your time.

The Show Results from Delmarva's 2009 Show are in and I'm sure the Cochin breeders out there would like to know that the Supreme Champion of the Show was a nice Bantam White Cochin Pullet by Tom and Sandra Roebuck. Reserve Featherleg was a Black Cochin female by John Burgess.

My husband and I are looking to raise a dozen or so chickens for meat this spring and summer and I am considering the standard cochin since we already have "pet" bantam cochins which I enjoy. I would like to stay away from the "engineered" birds that can barely stand on their own, and am willing to wait longer for them to fill out. Can anyone here give me more info on the possibility of using Standard Cochins as meat birds. Are they suitable, how big will they get, should I purchase all males since they are larger or will they start being too agressive before they are ready for slaughter, how long before they are ready to slaughter etc. Any info would be excellent.

Thank you,

Sarah

Hey all, its been awhile since I have been around here, but I wanted to stop in and wish everyone a happy hatching season, I know I have the BUG to get some chicks cooking. And SUPER excited to be getting some eggs from our very own Tom Roebuck here shortly!

While I am here I wanted to let everyone know of a site I came across called BackyardHatchery.com
From my understanding you don't have to be some huge hatchery to join, if you ever have chicks eggs or started or adult birds to sell this might be a great outlet for you.

I joined just recently, its only $5.00 a year, that's cheaper then running an ad in the local paper! That's a HUGE plus now a days with people not having a bunch of money to spend for advertising.
Also, this site has been developed in hopes to get a lot of breeders in ONE place, with an ad, so when someone is looking for something they can look in there states or any state they are interested in and try to find a breeder for what they are looking for, how nice would that be!

So anyway, there is more I can say I like about this idea, but I will stop, and let you go check it out and email the creator yourselves.

Again the site is BackyardHatchery.com

Hope you enjoy!!

Mottled cochin breeders--does mottling show in chicks as the feathers first come in or does it show after the first molt?
In the cross between a white cochin & mille fluer cochin, what colors may be obtained? Is white dominant or does spotting occur?

Thanks for your help. I sure enjoy reading the posts!

How long can eggs be chilled in the chicken house before they are not viable? My pullets are laying like crazy and would like to raise a some more chicks. I can only collect the once daily during the week and more on weekends. We have temps in the teens at night still. All are laying in nest boxes. would a heating pad on lowest setting help keep eggs viable and is it necessary. Should I just wait for warmer weather?
Thanks
