Hi all-

An offshoot of a recent thread. I am taking the breeding season off to fulfill other commitments, but also taking advantage of it to get the birds in top shape for next season. I have some birds that tend to be "hatchet breasted"- usually males in certain varieties. Undoubtedly there is some genetic predisposition here, but does anyone have any feed suggestions for putting weight on birds?
I feed 19% protein Purina Flight Conditioner, which should be sufficient. I moved recently, and was forced into a much higher protein feed for several weeks, and can vouch that this was not good for the birds. I have considered supplementing with Manna Pro, etc.

Any ideas?

I hope someone can help me with a problem I seem to be having. I got into cochin bantems 2 years ago and it is the best decision I have made!!! I love my birds. I want to start showing and getting my name out here on the west coast but I have one problem. My birds do not seem to be able to put weight on. I have fed lay, crumble, scratch, all 3 mixed and even went to 20%breeding feed and even scrambled eggs and nothing! Any suggestions would be most appreciated. my birds are not weighing overone lb.1 oz.

I raised some Standard White Cochins that will be a year old in June. A lot of the cockerels have prominent sickel feathers in their tails. Will these go away when they molt, or will they return as they are? I have 5 cockerels and only one has the soft rounded look to the tail as they should, but he is not the better one of the 5 other than tail at this point.

As all of you know, the Eastern National is now history. The Something to Crow About Poultry Show in Newport, Tn. was just that, Something To Crow About. There was almost 240 cochins. Most all of the birds were outstanding specimens and in excellent condition. The depth of quality in the blacks and the whites was exceptional, but I think the varieties stole this show. There was outstanding barreds, blues, splashes, brown reds, mottles and a lone birchen. All of these varieties had specimens that could have toppled any black or white and it was a sight to see and take in as an exhibitor.

Champion Overall a White pullet L/F by Tom Roebuck
Champion Large Fowl a White pullet by Tom Roebuck
Champion Bantam a Black cockeral by Tom Roebuck
Reserve Champion Bantam a Brown Red hen by H. Craig Carroll
Best A.O.V. a Birchen hen by H. Craig Carroll
Reserve A.O.V. a Splash pullet by H. Craig Carroll

It was a fun and friendly weekend. I was glad to see some of my old friends and have the opportunity to make new ones. The show was well run and couldn't have made the exhibitors feel more welcome. I personally would like to thank Tom and the Something To Crow About Poultry Show for putting on the first All Cochin Show in over 30 years. When I merged World Cochin and US Cochin into Cochins International, it was a personal ambition of mine to see the All Cochin Show start again. I was never able to fulfill that ambition and for that reason, I would simply like to say Thanks Tom.

All,
If you plan to advertise in the APA or ABA yearbook this year, you need to get those ads in ASAP. It's always nice to have a good amount of them included in our club page areas, so make sure you tell Karen (ABA) or Pat (APA) to include them in the club page section if that's what you'd like.

Note: I am not organizing the ads for submission. They go directly to the ABA or APA. If you have specific questions please direct them to the appropriate club secretary. They do the layouts for those publications.

The club page header and Master Breeder listing have been submitted to both organizations.

I'm interested in starting my own flock of exhibition quality standard cochins. Can anyone tell me if there are any midwestern breeders I can contact? Otherwise, are there upcoming shows where I might be able to meet and visit with breeders about how to best get started?

If I could be picky, I'd prefer blue cochins (or the genetic counterparts of black, white, splash). However, I wouldn't rule out other quality stock.

I attended a poultry show last year and was interested in the opportunity to participate. I've raised chickens for many years, but mostly just hatchery birds, etc.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you.

Date Posted: 12:59:26 04/13/08 Sun

The Gateway Poultry club hosted the ABA Semi-Annual and the 2008 Cochins International North Central District Meet on April 12/13, 2008. The club located the bantams in the very front of the show hall and the cochins were judged very early in the day. There were 110 cochin bantams shown in 9, count them 9!, beautiful colors. Comments were made by visitors and veterans as to the depth and quality of the bantams exhibited. Judge Heather Hayes of British Columbia Canada placed the birds and commented that she had never judged a class of cochins with such quality in all the various colors. The 9 best of variety birds placed in the cages for final judging were a testimony to the stong stance the CI club has taken in promoting the colored cochins. Thanks to all involved for making this a successful district meet.
The Results are as follows:

Blacks (22 shown): BV Judy Gantt RV Shari McCollough
Whites (39 shown): BV Judy Gantt RV Judy Gantt
Buffs (8 shown): BV Fred Abbitt RV Fred Abbitt
Blues (5 shown): BV Shari McCollough RV Same
Mottleds (10 shown):BV Judy Gantt RV Judy Gantt
Splash (2 shown): BV H. Craig Carroll RV Same
Partridge (2 shown): BV Matt McCammon RV Same
Barred (3 shown): BV Matt McCammon RV Matt Lhamon
Brown Reds (5 shown): BV Matt McCammon RV Craig Carroll
Birchen (4 shown) BV LInda Tobia RV Same

There were 4 Large Fowl exhibited by non-members.

The Best of Breed was a black male by Judy Gantt. He went on to be Champion Featherleg. Reserve of Breed was a black female by Shari McCollough which went on to be Reserve Featherleg. Best AOV bantam was the mottled hen by Judy Gantt. Reserve AOV was a barred cockerel by Matt McCammon.

Hi All,

I was wanting to know if anyone has crossed a Partridge Cochin on a Buff and if so what was the outcome. I have a great Partridge male, but my female was attacked by a German Shepard.

I was thinking I could improve the size and type of my standards if I crossed in Buff, but maybe black would be best.

Any advice on genetics would be greatly appreciated.

I am not in the position to get hatching eggs as I am still recovering from loses in Hurricane Katrina and have not yet purchased an incubator....I like to use broody hens better anyway. My husband and I were given 5 cochin hens and 2 roosters for a wedding present. The girls are very broody and will all jostle to sit on one egg. Makes for an interesting pile of feathers I tell you. However my problem is with the roosters. The original 2 have both died seemingly of the same thing. They reach maturity but then it seems their legs get very weak and trembly, so they just begin to lay around instead of strutting about with the girls. My husband cooks them bread every second day and they have warm pasta and grain every other day. But after all this laying around they don't forage in the garden. They appear too weak to stand and then they just die. It killed me when Goldie and Roger passed away but 4 days ago I noticed our black rooster Philip is displaying the same symptoms. He hasn't moved much at all today and when I did coax him to stand his legs were trembling and he only moved a few paces. Our other rooster, Elvis is only young but I expect him to go the same way eventually. What are we doing wrong? We love them but its heartbreaking to see them waste away. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers from Australia

hello
as some of you know i have been working on the milli fleur color for 8 yrs now. well this yr i have them breeding true to color. of the 30 chicks i have hatched all have started to show the milli pattern at 3 wks old. the type on this yrs breeders is as good as the buff and mottled that i show. i sell a few eggs and a bird or 2 every now and then and get decent money .well some people have jumped on the wagon and are selling crap. if you want to see what i mean go to eggbid .com and look under bantam adults and look at the pair selling for over 300.00. my question is how do i start the prosses of getting this color in the standard if i could get the prosses moving ahead maybe i could get people to work harder on the color and get people who are in it for the money to stop selling crap
THANK YOU

I have 5 standard Cochin Roosters for sale. ages range from a year to a year and a half. 4 are Splash and one is black.
they were bred and born here on are farm and very friendly.
Our older boys are ready for a flock of their own hens and the younger ones would be PERFECT for a 4-H.
can provide pictures and soon will be up on my website: www.capall-fiain.org
I am asking $20 each or will make a good barter if some one wants to take all.
We have had cochins for the last 3 years and have fallen in love with the breed.

Good morning everyone,

I am on a quest for Dun Cochin Bantams. Does the color even exist in the Cochins? If so, anyone care to share any info they might have?
I would really appreciate it.

I would also be interested in hatching eggs.

Thanks so much!

Hello Everyone,

I'm wanting to find out some info on the Lemon Blue Cochins before I add them to my flock. Is the color a true color? If you breed two LB Cochins are all the chicks LB? Do they only come in Bantam size? Any info to help me to understand will be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much for your time ! Take care, Mary Ann

I recently purchased and had shipped a Partridge roo, he is said to be 3 years old.
I would like to show him, I have never done shows before and cant wait!
After looking him over well, I have had some grooming to do to him, pop his spurs as they were HUGE and gave him a nice bath to get any critters off of him, I have Ivermec'ed him for any possable worms he may have had and also to kill any other bugs that were missed along with dusting him with DE.

I got him from a known breeder, (I think).

Anyway, my question for you all is, his skin. His breast all the way back and up to about his oil gland is red, like an irritation of some sort. His feet at the shaft of the feathers on his toes is red. Is this normal for the feet could it just be because of the feathering? IS this something I should be worried about and not get to show for the first time? What can I do to clean him up?

The previous owner used Seven dust on him, could it be a reation to that?

My first show is coming up in about 3 weeks, I really hope to show him! Here are some pictures.

Not sure if pictures will show if not let me know

I was wondering if anyone has some Barred Cochin bantams for pets only, free to a good home.
I live near the Tennessee and Alabama state line.
I would also consider any color cochin bantam as pet only.

I currently have one blue splash hen which is very much kept as a pet, although I showed her recently at the Fl. State Fair to gain a blue.

I have kept show chickens on and off during my life.

What I am looking for is a nice looking good type hen to be a pet. She would live with Lily (my cochin) in the 10 x 10 x 10 aviary right outside my living room window. I am going to start taking Lily around to Nursing homes, she really couldn't be tamer.

I'm writing this to give hobbist and breeders both the idea that they may have a good hen for me. I am attacted to interesting colors like the blues, splashes, columbians, birchen, but I like a nice fat well formed and frizzles out little hen too.

Thanks.

Due to the unpleasant experience I have recently had purchasing adult birds from a "reputable" east coast breeder. I will never buy another adult bird again before I can see it in person so I know EXACTLY what I am getting.

I am on the search for some Bantam Partridge cochin eggs. The chances of getting anything ill in my flock is alot lower hatching my own over buying more adults.

I am hoping to hatch out some hens, but realize my luck is usually on the rooster side.

I am working on a project trying to figure out and understand the genetics of some frizzle partridge cochin hens I currently have.

Anyway, I am sure this is a far crying chance but though I would give it a shot.

Please you may contact me here or privately with anything you have to offer. Thank you very much.

please note my added comment under the Partridge Roo skin question. It has my way of dealing with the spurs on my older Cock Birds. I am just a little puzzle about the comments made about the potato use to remove the spurs. Bill

it is winter time in my area and i was looking over my males and found that some of my young white cockrels and barred cockrels had some major frostbite on their combs and some of their wattles. If these frostbitten parts fall off, will they grow back? or will the be combless for the rest of their life? And i have a question about one of my other males. When he was young, he was attacked by the rest of the chicks it was living with. Since then, the only noise he has been able to make is crowing. other than that he just wezzes. is this something bad?

I would like to see a discussion about flooring options for bantam cochins- bedding(shavings, straw, etc) versus wire.

I was taught that cochins needed bedded pens- mostly to preserve their foot feathering. I believe there are other benefits also; asthetic, easier on their joints, possibly better fertility (not important if you AI) etc.

However, there is a plethora of downsides to bedded pens- the cost of bedding, more time cleaning pens, birds are exposed to their own waste, spilled water becomes a large mess, etc.

Since I am always devising my next cage design, I would like to hear what experienced cochin breeders on the forum prefer and believe.
