Hi Sarah,
I completely agree with what Tom says!! They are pretty hardy actually! I'm located in N. Virgina, about an hour N. of Tom. I still have some birds (bantam cochins and OE Creles) outside but covered on 3 or 4 sides with plastic to protect them from the wind. We've had temps down in the lower 20s. My biggest reason for moving them in, sooner rather than later, is to avoid frozen points on the combs of the males when there are prolonged temp. drops. As Tom indicated, the little "radiator like" oil filled heaters do pretty well even in Jan/Feb here. Rarely does it get cold enough to freeze the water in my uninsulated 10 x 16 coop. These little heaters cost about $30-35 at Lowe's or Home Depot hareware stores. You may need two (2) in your area if your coop fairly large?? If they are close together, one will probably do the trick. Good luck with them!
