Sarah,
Living in New York and having some severe cold I have found that the oil heaters are not sufficient in very cold weather.I use Kerosene Wick heaters that are just excellent for me.I know you hve to be careful with them but my chickens are housed in individual cages for the most part and none are on the floor of my chicken housing.I keep all combustable away from the heater. There are other heaters out there even propane but they are expensive! One of the main problems with winter is some coops are just to tight and moisture seems to contribute a lot to frozen combs on males. What ever you do make sure you have at least some ventilation.
