TERRA - Was not in any way trying to upset you about my comments. I HAVE tried the potatoe method, about 20 years ago & it worked fine. BUT, I discovered that it could be done WITHOUT the potatoe, without a lot of blood (maybe a drop) & without the bird having any discomfort. There is really no reason to file off the point. It is really sharp but doesn't cause any problems
I can understand your concern because of your past experience, but you ask for advice & you got some very knowledgeable breeders to reply. You can bet that if the hot potatoe was the best/easiest method, they would have recommended it.
As I said, the very first time or two I used a hot potatoe. Then I used plyers. Then I discovered that I could do it by hand. I have never had more than a drop (or 2) of blood. BTW, if you are concerned about it bleeding simply sprinkle some flour on it, it helps the blood coagulate. (so does Sugar)
