You should talk with your project leader. Get him/her to buy a box of cornish cross chicks. Preferably 5 or so for each exhibitor. You can charge $1 each and make back the money it cost to buy the birds. Here in Indiana, there are several commercial poultry companies that will supply 4H clubs with FREE chicks. Tyson is nice enough to do that for us in our county. These should be the only chicks that can be exhibited in a meat pen. Here a meat pen consists of 2 birds as closely matched as possible around 5pounds when judged. If you get 5 chicks you have enough extras to allow for deaths and birds that don't grow well or grow too well. If you can get that project started in your area, everyone will be competing with birds the same age and the same breed. That is the purpose of a meat pen. If some birds are a month older than others, the contest isn't being controlled in the proper manner. As Robert adds, 4Hers around here can get $500+ for a pair of broilers at the Auction. Some who have arranged buyers ahead of time can double that amount. Good luck with this endeavor and you should be commended for thinking ahead for a project that is several months away.
