I really enjoyed the show and talking to my fellow Cochin People. The BV Champion row we set up for Heather Hayes to pick the BB and RB was awesome. Many thanks to the Gateway Club for a nice show and especially to Fred Abbitt for his work in getting the birds there. What a Class of Blacks and Whites, just about any of the birds could have won anywhere! Congrats to Judy and Shari for BB and RB both on the Blacks.
I went to Gateway to get some Black bantams to improve my Blue Bantam and Black bantam Frizzle lines. I emailed Judy Gantt as I had never met her before and asked if she had any for sale. We exchanged a few pictures and I told her what I was looking for. I also told her I was a real picky customer and sometimes hard to please:) I got there on Fri and met Judy and looked at her male birds and found a smooth and frizzle male. I had to wait till Sat to pick out some females as there were other customers ahead of me. On Sat I found 3 of exactly what I was looking for in females. Super heads, wide feathers on the cusions were my main points I need to improve. Thanks Judy for all your help, you are truley a great person and breeder and look forward to talking Cochins with you again.
Now, what a difference a year makes in Fred Abbitt's buffs. It was all I could do to not take some of his females home with me. Great job Fred, I am looking for a follow up next year. Shari Mc. as always did a great job in Blues, Judy is right on your heals with a real nice female to work with. Stiff Class of Mottles and Judy came out on top this time. The two birds I was most impressed with were Craig Carroll's Splash females. I would have to say they may be some of the best typed Cochin females I have seen in recent years and they could have come home with me in a minute. Glad to see you back Craig, most of us remember him as a master of the Black but his true gift to the Cochin fancy has been his Brown Reds, Birchens, Blues, Wheatons and a few other colors he has worked on. Matt Mc. once again put down some nice Part. and Barred bantams. I am luckey enough to have seen all his progress over the years in these colors and he has defined himself as a true breeder and preservationist of the rarer colors.
