Helen,
Not dumb sounding at all. It really is a dominance issue, and I've used your technique to some success. My buff bantam males have a tendency to be a bit big for their britches, and I've found that exactly what you described does help. Not for all of them though. I have a Buff Wyandotte male that is as mean as a snake, and used him very little for breeding this year, although a son of his doesn't display the same kind of aggression.
