Good explanation by Robert Rhodes. The description in the standard is what you should strive for. Too many times I've seen birds advertised as "show quality" and they simply don't measure up to the standard for that breed. Not everyone is concerned with having "show quality" birds, and that's fine, but if your goal is to compete in the exhibition arena or raise a breed long term, then it would make sense to strive toward the description in the standards. The best way to start is to obtain stock from noted breeders that have been doing this a little while. When that isn't an option it is possible to start with commercial hatchery stock, but hatching large numbers and culling very hard will be necessary normally. It costs just as much to feed a good bird as it does a cull.
