Joan,
Not to worry. Not something that is paid to much attention in Cochins. I would keep an eye on his other spur. Sometimes they can curl completely around and back into their own leg. Most likely he caught his other one on something and that's how it was broken. They can be trimmed with nail cutters or twisted off. If you twist this one off do it after the show. They can bleed. Also, make sure you hold the leg firmly so you don't torque his hock joint or foot. Doesn't usually take much to twist them off. Don't wiggle it back and forth though as that can make it bleed more. You can twist it back and forth a little to loosten, but not a side to side motion. If it does bleed you can always use some quick stop on it.
Tom
