Bryant, I offer no other solution than what you suggested. You might also put them in a box with a open top. (You didn't say how big they are and what you're using to transport. ) I've never had chicks to smother when their heat source goes out; just juvenilles when they are all feathered out and are put out on the ground. I've only lost 1 this year when (25-30) were put outside at one time. This is a low number and seems to vary from year to year. Some years, they just seem to be smarteror dumber---whatever the case may be. My over head lights are on 24 hrs and I also use a a light for a heat source or when bigger just another light closer to them. Good Luck. Judy
