Tickets pre-sold

DESPITE an appeal by stars of movies participating in the Manila Film Festival and by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), Columbia Pictures has declared it would still show "Spider-Man 2" starting June 30, right in the middle of the festival.

Actors like Robin Padilla, Judy Ann Santos, Wendell Ramos and director Maryo J. de los Reyes had appealed to Columbia Pictures to move the play date of "Spider-Man 2" to a later date so it would not compete for audience attention while the two-week film festival is going on. They made their appeal during media interviews.

They said the local movies participating in the film fest would suffer at the box-office against a "sure hit" like "Spider-Man 2."

But Columbia Pictures refused to budge. "We can't do that," said Columbia marketing manager Doris Torres. "We've already handed out pre-sold tickets and all are paid for."

The company would have to seek the permission of its US office before it could change the movie's play date, added Torres during a telephone interview.

"What they can do is to appeal to the people to patronize their movies in the film festival," she said.

Columbia Pictures is the local distributor of "Spider-Man 2," which is produced by Columbia Tristar Pictures International.

"I'm very sad about what is happening to the festival," De los Reyes told Inquirer Entertainment in a telephone interview. "We all have to unite for all of these movies to make money. We really have to work hard."

"Kulimlim," directed by De los Reyes and starring Robin Padilla, currently ranks third in box-office standing in the festival that started June 23 in Manila theaters and SM theaters nationwide.

"Volta," directed by Wenn Deramas and starring Ai Ai de las Alas, is the box-office leader, followed by "Sabel," directed by Joel Lamangan and starring Judy Ann Santos and Wendell Ramos.

Sure moneymaker

Last Friday, MTRCB Chair Marissa Laguardia said the distributor of "Spider-Man 2" should support the local movie industry by "giving way" to the six movies in the festival.

She said Columbia could start showing its movie, "let's say first week or second week of July. That would give the audience ample time to watch all the film fest entries.

"Anyway, a movie like 'Spider-Man 2' would surely do well at the box office no matter when it is shown," Laguardia added.

But on Saturday, Columbia declared that it would proceed with the opening of "Spider-Man 2" as scheduled.

The MTRCB grants permits to exhibit films.

"We issued the permit (to 'Spider-Man 2') two weeks ago," Laguardia said. "It now depends on the producer, bookers and theater owners when they want 'Spiderman 2' shown."

To Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, who is also the film fest organizer, Laguardia has a suggestion: "The Columbia office is on Taft Avenue, under the jurisdiction of Mayor Atienza. Maybe he could request Columbia Pictures to move the play date to sometime in July."

Participating in the Manila Film Festival are De los Reyes' "Kulimlim" and "Naglalayag," "Volta," "Sabel," Ron Rick's "Mano Mano 3" and Jun Posadas' "Anak Ka ng Tatay Mo."

TRO vs 'Imelda'

Also last Friday, the MTRCB released the exhibition permit for Ramona Diaz's award-winning documentary "Imelda." On the same day, the Makati City court issued a 20-day temporary restraining order for the screening of the documentary.

"Imelda" is locally distributed by Tony Gloria's Unitel Pictures, which also produced "American Adobo" and "Crying Ladies."

Former First Lady Imelda Marcos has asked the Makati City regional trial court to prevent the screening of the documentary about her, saying she agreed to be interviewed only on the understanding that it was only for Diaz's thesis.

"I think the (former) First Lady would also benefit from this because it shows her good side," Laguardia pointed out. "The docu got a G rating from the ratings board. The Board recommends that children watch it.

"But it's really up to the court to decide," she added.
