Here in the southern US, (Tennessee), AC is a necessity, not a luxury. Every school is air-conditioned. I normally don't turn off my AC for good until sometime in October.

I remember a few years ago, before the older schools were upgraded, when the predicted temperature was above a certain point, students were dismissed after lunch. It became such a hassle that the state finally said "screw it" and coughed up the money to air-condition the remaining buildings. I remember going to a school with no AC when I was a kid and I really don't recall being that uncomfortable. (Nor do I recall ever being dismissed early because of "heat".) I don't know if I have selective memory about those days or if kids today are not as well acclaimated as we were.
