You know, I really got hooked by this story. It's well-written and the plot and character development seem promising. I like the premise and I find the characters have drawn me in quite quickly. I guess it's partly the current-day setting - makes me think of how many military women really are in this position, and how sad it is that they can't just be who they are in all facets of their lives.

I'm a university professor, which is perhaps as far as you can get from being a navy captain; however, as my partner has often commented, if there really were a Starfleet, and women could have the careers and opportunities that Janeway has, exploring and defending their world, (see I am on topic ), and make a difference in the way that she is able to within Starfleet, without being defined by their gender alone, then I guess my students would have to look for someone else to torture them using the Socratic method :-).

Unfortunately, stories like this one still reflect the reality that, in most of the word's armed forces, women are still defined, and treated, in stereotypical ways. Just last week I read that the top brass at the US Air Force Academy is being replaced, in part because women cadets who were sexually harrassed and assaulted were not taken seriously when they lodged complaints. I guess the 24th century is still far away...
