musette asked:
Does anyone think that KM is calling Janeway "flawed" BECAUSE she wants companionship?

This anyone doesn't see KM calling Janeway flawed on the companionship issue. I think she is saying Janeway made the right choice, the unselfish choice, in not pursuing a personal relationship. KM does suggest she wanted an episode that would show how Janeway would react to the realization of the consequences of making that sacrifice. If KM would see a flaw I don't think it would be in the "wanting" but rather in the final "choosing." In KM's mind Janeway made the right choice. No intimate relationships, the ship and crew first and foremost.

I had to go back and re-read the interview again. sheesh *g*

just wanted to make sure you read it...*innocent look*

KM says of KJ: "Yes! She's a flawed human being. The compelling thing about Janeway is that she could be every woman except at her core she's a lot braver than most. But she is in constant search of her humanity."

Interesting that pursuing a personal relationship isn't part of that search...Oh I know, I'm being hard on the actress, who, despite her "ownership" of the character, couldn't get the guys in the head office to find her a decent squeeze. Now that WOULD be brave. *g*

I guess I came away from the article with a sense that no matter how hard she/they tried, Voyager could never quite live up to expectations or its potential. I'd hate to have to sit in that realization after devoting seven years of my life to the effort. She thought that the seventh season was the best - with the exception of her tour de force opportunity in "Endgame," I don't see how she could really think that. JMHO

Not to go on a bashing spree, but did anyone who writes and thinks about Janeway, find KM's statement that KJ is an everywoman, but "at her core a lot braver than most" an underestimation of the Captain? To me, that description aptly describes Shannon O'Donnell, not Kathryn Janeway. I just find it hard to believe that an ordinary gal with a fearless streak makes it to Star Fleet Captain without something more than that going for her...I think I've worried this topic to death, eh Dar2vad?

One more nit, while I'm on a roll *g*: "constant search for her humanity?" Why? I thought that was the Doctor's and Seven's journey, not hers...

Yes, but in fanfiction we often see Janeway telling Seven that in fact, Seven has allowed Janeway to find her own humanity...

musette, given that we're talking about an interview here... go and read (or re-read) the the last coupld of interviews that Michelle Erica Green did with KM. It sounds so much like she thought that there was really a plan to explore Janeway's sexuality, either in the end with Chakotay or in some other way. I think that they teased her with it and then handed her 'Fair Haven' and 'Workforce' wich I imagine, was NOT what she thought she was going to get...

just when I finish answering yours, you post one to mine...I'll go back and read the interviews though. I do seem to recall that yes, KM was promised a boyfriend early on.

About her search for humanity - yes in fanfic the J/7 relationship allows her to make new discoveries in that realm, but the show danced around that to a great extent. Sure, when J's teaching Seven, then yes, I suppose she's discovering, or rediscovering humanity in order to teach it, but I don't think that's what KM meant.

I can think of quite a few episodes that allowed for the Captain's personal search: the Raven, Equinox, the spirit quest epi. to save Kes, the one where she "dies" and I suppose Endgame, if you count the Admiral's personal quest, or mission - and of course 11:59 and Night. Counterpoint pissed me off, so I won't count that one...*g* But most of those episodes come from the last three seasons and the earlier seasons depicted the more heroic and cunning Captain that I personally preferred.

I think I too could call a preference for the cunning or heroic captain, because in that, we got the entire story. She saved the ship, her crew and their quest for home. The other things, were never completed... we never saw how those things effected her. I think the dissconnect, is where we see those things as having effected the captain, Mulgrew sees those things as having effected the captain and uses that in her work, but TPTB just dropped it all and we and the actor have to piece it all back together.

Do you remember in "Relativity" when the early Janeway first sits in the command chair - the look on her face - imperious, arrogant, entitled and completely in control. She knew every inch of her ship and let everyone know it. I loved that portrayal because that's just the sort of person who attains a captaincy. Not to mention her incredible memory - to remember that tiny flux in the whatjamacallit as something that happened years earlier in drydock. (Of course, remembering the attractive ensign? Well, that wouldn't take too much work *g*.) That's our Katie! Throughout this episode I saw the Captain I knew and loved. And that was in the fifth season...what the hell happened? You don't have to answer that one. *g*
