It involves the complextities of hibernation. Turtles are reptiles which means they have lungs and breathe air. Some turtles hibernate in winter at the bottom of ponds. How can an air breathing animal spend several months below water?

Some turtles can take water in through their anal opening. Water contains oxygen. Two sacs near the anal opening assist the turtle to absorb the oxygen from the water. The oxygen is enough because the turtle is hibernating and its systems are in slow mode. Oh, perhaps that should be super slow mode.

Before you ask AF the turtle never goes into the deep end of the pond.

So be careful not to underestimate the turtle slow doesn't mean it's not smart.
