Subject: It would be amusing if it wasn't criminal ...

We are in a London borough but far enough out that we really count as leafy Surrey - however, the riots have touched us too.

I went into our local supermarket this morning and saw that one of their big panes of glass was cracked. When I asked what had happened, the young lady serving me replied, 'Rioter.'

Yes, that's right. A Single, Solo Rioter, rioting all on his tod. Apparently, he hit the window once, couldn't break it properly and so ran away. Obviously our rioter isn't in the same exalted class as the Croydon scum.

I remember a couple of years ago when every house on our street in a very quiet suburb of Seattle got "tagged" by a graffiti "artist." Kids, the police said, with nothing else to do. We took it personally! And guess who was responsible for the cleanup?

Things do seem to have calmed down in London, though? I'm so glad you're not right in the middle of it all. And at least your market didn't have anything stolen - although the cost of replacing that window won't be cheap.

Yes, it's calmed down a lot, although I don't know what will happen when they take all the extra police off the streets. Heaven knows what the bill for the extra policing and the cleanup is going to cost!

what happened in London seems a bit less critical today than it did last week.

I guess it is small fry - but after this, I found that they had ramraided the local gunshop and helped themselves to everything they could. No, of course we're not a warzone - nobody will starve or do without clean water - but there are loads of small businesses which have spent not just years but generations in building their livliehoods - and these have simply been ripped away. They're not big comglomerates or faceless corporate beings. They're local traders and families who have lost their shops and homes. Who had forfeited business insurance because it was too expensive and they hoped to take it up again when things got better.
