Go to ALL ABOUT SPIKE, read the FF called LOVE IS BLIND, by JW, AKA Avalon.

You can read the tie that authenticates the author in several places in the FF, but the best one is at the opening of the FF and follow it up in the first episode of BtVS / season seven. You are to hear the same riff or technique in word use JW used in both stories.
