we had a big argument in the office last week about panthers. and that there are no such things. whatevs. potato potahto. even if it's a matter of geography etc...i still think the word and image of a panther is cool. i'm sticking to it.

Elsewhere they're "cougars,", "mountain lions," "pumas," or "catamounts," but in Florida, they're "panthers." They're also endangered, on the list since 1973.

Now, you might have been arguing about black panthers - and I don't think Florida's are ever black. But black panthers do exist, and they can be either leopards or jaguars (and maybe cougars). The word "panther" in their case just refers to the color (a malanistic variant) of the cat.

Sorry to be pedantic - it's long been an interest of mine since I actually saw a Florida panther when I was a kid. Sadly, it was dead on the side of the road, having been hit by a car. It looked exactly like the cougars I've seen here and the mountain lions in the Southwest.
