But doesn't his want override what Joss presents as love?

There are many who believe love is as varied as there are people, but the selfless, sacrifice seems to be what Joss allows for love--which means considering what THE OTHER PERSON wants and even needs more than the desire or neediness within Spike. Spike wants Buffy to love him because he needs to win love, and he doesn't really care that Buffy is NOT in love with him. This stain of humanity of remembered love was tied to the care of a sick woman who needed him and to the pain of rejection of what he wanted with Cecily--he even offered himself as a good man, as if that should be sufficient for Cecily to swoon into his arms and marry him.

I can't accept love from a soulless vampire, but then I like the obsessive, purple of Spike and Dru, not to mention the same dynamic is in play between Spike and Dru. He continues to want her to choose him over Angelus because he wants what he wants--and it seems to follow him even after the soul. So much so that he doesn't even believe Buffy when she said she loves him.

There is a comic and ensouled Spike actually lends Dru his soul, only to find that such pain is just cruel to her--this is a guy who considers THE OTHER PERSON over his own needs and wants.

The chip, BTW, was merely a brake on his behavior--he still very much wanted to be a monster (and after the initiative's torture, who could blame him, as the people were being shown as the real monsters).

Thanks for your thoughts; I truly see the sympathy for pain within the fans and it really feels like anthropomorphism. I just think love as a many splendored thing makes for good soap, but not an illumination on what Joss very simply considers love, as I see it.

Be well
