Subject: What's up this weekend, ya'll?

We're watching concrete dry -- yes, the patio under what will be our new deck finally got poured this week, after a 90-day wait since the contract was signed! It was beautiful, too, until the squirrel skittered across it ... now it's been "personalized," I guess. :-)

Anyway, late next week the actual deck building starts, so by the start of the summer we may indeed be sitting out there with our G&T's (and you won't have to hear me gripe about contractors any more) -- but then we'll have to get up and start working on the yard, which is a real mess because of all the plants and junk that used to be on the old deck, plus a lot of deck building materials, etc., piled up all over the place.

We were going to cat-proof the area under the deck (a "catio") this summer, but I doubt very much if we'll get that far. I think I'll just plant some well-behaved clematis on the corner, so it can climb the post and hang down beneath the deck (and we'll keep an eye on the wisteria this time and not let it near the deck!) I'm hoping I can find the same clematis we have in front, which has made a lovely curtain of vines with small white/green flowers there.

Anyway, this weekend and a bit beyond: Supper at Ken's (His rhodies are finally blooming! Everything's late this year because, despite what's happening all over the rest of the country, we have had a chilly spring), graduation party at the beach (we've seen all three of this family's kids through high school), American Cancer Society fundraiser picnic, grading, going through all the applications (75 so far for 32 seats, and the day isn't over yet) for next year's Biotech Academy, baking (as always), and then graduation ceremonies Monday night. I get to sit with the teachers again, so cool. The rest of the kids have two more weeks to go.

Although the doctor says my MRSA has finally retreated and the strep is gone from my ankle, this weekend will be centered on more rehabilitation of the offended ankle/foot. All the activity yesterday caused massive swelling so it is back to propping the thing up higher than my heart and waiting for the fluid to disappear.

Actually, I feel great and am infused with energy and plans. Our recently graduated from high school granddaughter is coming from Colorado; Camp Gram goes forward for the nine year old grandson and his four year old sister. We will be doing the entire movie theatre schtick; bowling, minature golf and a movie. I see bankruptcy in our future. And, then, school will start and it will be the holidays again. Christmas in Colorado this year. More about this later. Hugs

P.S. I guess this wasn't such a weekend wrap up as a summer wrap up. Sorry. Double hugs

The brushfires and muckfires make it hard to breath so I'll stick with indoor activities as much as possible. I've been trying to go bowling on Saturday's. The way I do it (continuous no breaks except to dry the ball off) it's pretty good excercise. I'm trying to get my game back in shape. I used to have a 150 average and could occassionaly break out a 200 game (230 is my high). Just started back and the rust is obvious. Missing single pin spares that were 2nd nature when I bowled regularly. I gave it up cause of bad experiences with leagues. (When you just want recreation and it turns into the equivalent of a government meeting every time you get together it is no fun) So I'm finally back after a decade or more. Bowling by yourself for excercise without having to deal with rules and red tape is much more fun. Don't think I'll ever go back to league play.

That sounds just lovely, Salty. I'm sorry about the bum ankle - I've missed being able to check the board recently and I didn't know. Glad it's better now!

Lewis H., I agree - solo is the only way to bowl! I hear horror stories all the time about the two leagues my Mom bowls with.

Just heard from the deck guy - they're not starting until the 22nd. This means we won't have a deck yet when school's out on the 24th. Oh, well. It's been really fun watching Nick and Nora supervise the workers; now Doc will get to see that, too. Actually, it's quite relaxing, watching other people work, y'know? :-)

Watching UFC tonight. No specific plans otherwise, though I want to see Kung Fu Panda 2 finally. Need to start on the next book sometime this weekend, and go to the grocery store for breakfast stuff again.

Both of them? That's terrible! I wish them both all the luck in the world.

appropriate words at a time like this? I don't think so. But, I'll keep them in my prayers and since I know they are both champions (look at their daughters and grandson) will expect a happy ending. Hugs

I'm sorry gretch. The economy just keeps getting worse and worse and it doesn't seem to matter how hard you work or how loyal you are or who the president is. I'm going to out of work myself in a few weeks or at best by the end of the year from what I was just told. Fortunately, I'm been preparing for it for a while now and I don't have kids or a mortgage. Makes me very fortunate in these times.

Make sure you use part of your time off to do fun things. That's what kept us sane when Dewey was laid off a few years ago. Also, now might be the time to consider switching professions, as he did. If you need training/education for a new career, there are tons of online classes as well as all kinds of regular classes out there, and lots of scholarship money is available if you go looking for it.

Best of luck to you!

When I got laid off last time back in 2001, I promised myself to be better prepared financially next time. (I figured there would almost certainly be a next time.) So I've been saving a lot, and my mom left me a comfortable sum. So I'm ok. If I budget carefully, I really can get by for quite a long time. I am blessed by never having children or getting married. My girlfriend depends on me to a certain degree but she isn't that extravagant.

I hope your folks will be ok and can bounce back soon.

P.S. You folks should really appreciate my posts. I can't unless I fill out the dohickie with the letters. Have no idea why. Didn't I say long ago that I'm computer friendly while being computer illiterate? Hugs

It stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart." It's a spam-detector, and someone was kind enough to implement it here for us.

Life is good!
