I'm sorry gretch. The economy just keeps getting worse and worse and it doesn't seem to matter how hard you work or how loyal you are or who the president is. I'm going to out of work myself in a few weeks or at best by the end of the year from what I was just told. Fortunately, I'm been preparing for it for a while now and I don't have kids or a mortgage. Makes me very fortunate in these times.

Make sure you use part of your time off to do fun things. That's what kept us sane when Dewey was laid off a few years ago. Also, now might be the time to consider switching professions, as he did. If you need training/education for a new career, there are tons of online classes as well as all kinds of regular classes out there, and lots of scholarship money is available if you go looking for it.

When I got laid off last time back in 2001, I promised myself to be better prepared financially next time. (I figured there would almost certainly be a next time.) So I've been saving a lot, and my mom left me a comfortable sum. So I'm ok. If I budget carefully, I really can get by for quite a long time. I am blessed by never having children or getting married. My girlfriend depends on me to a certain degree but she isn't that extravagant.

I hope your folks will be ok and can bounce back soon.
