Whatever soul that had been cursed into "Angel" had become the person everyone knew as "Angel". Therefore, to get "Angel" back, Willow had to find the soul that had lived inside Laim/Angelus/Angel since the curse. Just my theory.

I think you're dead-on (so to speak) about the common thread.
