thinking back to when I was 16 everyone I knew including myself could pretty much be classified as insane to some degree or another. I mean I certainly would have dated a sexy vampire girl given half the chance at that age. I'd probably even give it some thought today but not for very long. Humans have issues. Imagine having those issues for centuries and repeating the same mistakes over and over and over like we've seen Katherine, Damien, Stefan well really every vampire on the show.
