Sweet memories enough

Sat, November 24, 2007

They never rehearse. Don't have a set list.

Their fans love to challenge them by spinning "the Wheel of Garrett" -- and seeing if it lands on punk, country, metal or "sing a song or tell a joke."

All the four guys in Sweet Leaf Garrett have to show for 15 years of rocking London is a lot of fun, memories and the chance to keep on doing it.

"We're like the factory guy getting to play on the factory hockey team. It's that kind of thing," says drummer Steve Crew.

Along with bandmates -- guitarists and singers Jefferson (Jeffy B) Bialkowski and Shaun Sanders and bassist Jeff (Stan) Fountain -- Crew celebrates 15 years of gigs tonight and tomorrow night at the Brass Door at 10 p.m.

All four share a world of experience in London rock -- including past and present gigs in Adam West, Bobnoxious, Helix, the Malachi Brothers, Tim E and the Yes Men, Rev. Freddie and the Distillers, the Buffalo Brothers, Julia Propeller and more.

Sweet Leaf Garrett is the part-time home for the four musicians as they keep rocking in their other "day job" bands.

SLG's happy saga started 15 years ago at the Brunswick when Sweet Leaf's first lineup began playing on Sunday nights.

"It was $37.50 each -- and a pickled egg," Bialkowski recalls of the early days.

Fountain, the only London rocker nicknamed for his amazing impersonations of great comic Stan Laurel, joined about a year into the run. All four rockers loved the free-spirited SLG approach.

"We could just play whatever the heck we wanted to . . . it was refreshing to do that twice a week," Crew says.

These days, in addition to its regular Sunday night gig at the Brass Door, the band plays Wednesdays at Norma Jean's.

The band takes its name from Black Sabbath's 1971 ode, Sweet Leaf, and 1970s teen idol Leif Garrett. The Leif Garrett songbook may be one of the few areas SLG doesn't investigate as it cheerfully -- and expertly -- tackles everything from McCartney to Ozzy to Zep to KISS while detouring for lots of punk and metal.

Back in the day, nobody expected Sweet Leaf Garrett to run and run and run. "Are you kidding me?" laughs Fountain when asked if he thought the band was built to last.

The fun-first, no-stress atmosphere has kept the band going, he says. So has its refusal to take itself too seriously.

So has the certainty that somebody has a grasp on the next song. "Jeffy's a walking juke box and Shaun's the same way," Fountain says.

The band did try having a set list. Once. It didn't work.

Instead of just rocking the joint, the Sweet Leafs found themselves spending that gig looking over the long, long list and being a little amazed at how many songs they knew.

Still, having a list of the hundreds of songs in the SLG canon proved to have its uses.

At one point, a fool agent didn't believe Sweet Leaf Garrett knew the right stuff for a certain gig. The list was handy.

"We just let it roll off his fax machine with 500 songs on it," Bialkowski laughs. That did the job -- and Sweet Leaf Garrett got the gig.

The band can also rely on its "Wheel of Garrett" to keep things moving. It's the London rock and roll version of the old "crown and anchor" wheels or the Wheel of Fortune TV version. Except it's a lot funnier.

With one spin, the wheel might land on CanCon -- so Sweet Leaf Garrett would have to respond with something from a Canadian band. No matter the spin, it's tough to stump SLG.

The spin might put the fan on the spot. The Wheel of Garrett might order the fan to down a pickled egg with Tabasco sauce.

Even that should go down nicely this weekend. Sweet Leaf Garrett is sweet 15 -- and they definitely know how to party.
