Yes, it is typical for them to have a bare spot on their breasts. Basically their feathers spread apart in that area because these birds get chunky, like you say. They are brown egg layers and the hens are good setters. The roosters make good meat birds too, for the smaller family and/or those who don't want much for left-overs.
