A new national limit imposed on children’s products in the US, has forced motorcycle dealers to remove small capacity dirt bikes (between 50-100cc) aimed at young riders from their showrooms.

The new legislation makes it illegal for products intended for children younger than 12 to contain lead at levels greater than 600 parts per million. Most motor vehicles have parts exceeding these levels.

Around 100,000 small capacity dirt bikes were sold in the US in 2008, according to estimates from the US motorcycle industry, who also fear some USD 100 million of inventory may now be worthless.
