Date Posted: 06:20:55 03/09/09 Mon The Government has proposed cutting the national speed limit to 50mph – the first speed reduction since 1978 when the limit was brought down to the current 60mph. The scheme, which may be in place as early as 2010, would affect up to two thirds of the country’s road network. 70mph would still be permitted on motorways and 60mph would be allowed on the ‘safest’ A-roads. The speed limits would be monitored by average speed cameras (already installed at 43 locations), which reportedly can monitor speeds over distances of up to six miles. Roads Minister Jim Fitzpatrick claimed the “vast majority” of motorists would support the scheme, adding that 3,000 people a year are killed on UK roads. Edmund King, president of the AA, warned “The danger of the blanket approach is, you lose the respect or the support of the motorist. We all know some rural roads where the 60mph limit is ridiculous, although there are equally others where it suits. So it is a case of getting that balance.” [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
