Date Posted: 05:27:40 04/06/09 Mon Protesters walked out as a committee refused to scrap the controversial £1.50 parking charge for motorcyclists in Westminster. Over 1,000 bikers rode to Westminster to stage a well-behaved demonstration outside City Hall. Inside, lobbyists accused Conservative-run Westminster Council of betraying its own political party and constituents by introducing the charges. ‘No To Bike Parking Fees’ chairman Warren Djanogly, said: "We're supported here today by car drivers, by residents, by traders, by ordinary taxpayers. They're here to tell you in no uncertain terms that, Mr Danny Chalkley, to bring a stealth tax in by the back door is not acceptable." Labour councillor Rupert D'Cruz accused Westminster of raising almost £5million from the parking charges while claiming the project was 'revenue neutral'. Assistant Parking Director Kevin Goad said the toll was fund improvements to help deal with the problem of oversubscribed motorcycle bays. The scrutiny committee sided with Mr Goad, but did recommend that the charge should be reduced to £1 per day and that a parking forum representing all interested groups be formed.
