Date Posted: 05:39:31 12/21/10 Tue A student from Bournemouth University (UK) has designed a motorcycle helmet that will be easier and safer for paramedics to remove after an accident. The Splinter helmet provides safe removal via side-clips that unlock a single interior sub-assembly, allowing the helmet to slide apart. Jack Hooker, 23, developed the helmet as his dissertation project for his Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Computer Aided Product Design, in consultation with St John Ambulance. Hooker said “I met with a member of the St John's Ambulance and we discussed finding a solution to helmet removal. Removing each of the clips unlocks the helmets interior, allowing the one piece outer shell and cranial protection to slide off, leaving the small sub-assembly around the base of the wearer's head to help maintain support during removal.” The design saw Hooker win the 2010 Santander Design Grand Slam award. The next step is to find an existing helmet manufacturer to partner with, with the intention being to bring the Splinter helmet to fill production in the next two years. Retail price would be “somewhere between £200 and £400”. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
