Date Posted: 06:26:51 01/24/06 Tue Yorkshire businessman Andrew Lassu set up a track - on disused colliery land - to give a home to off-road bikers. Despite Barnsley Council getting a large number of complaints about off-roaders, they told Mr Lassu he had to close the facility! Now Mr Lassu is applying for official permission. He said "We originally opened it just to see what the response would be. There was a lot of interest and we were trying to provide some training for people as well.” "People want to ride and buy the bikes, but then have nowhere to go. It makes sense for everyone if there is somewhere that is suitable, where everything is regulated. For example, there would not be people riding up and down Cronkhill Lane because we would insist that bikes were brought in vans or on trailers.” "We would also have strict opening hours. When there is nothing there, people will go and ride anyway and if that happens there is no control over what they do or what time they do it" he said. Sound tests had been carried out and appeared to fall within acceptable margins, a situation likely to improve further if plans were passed and earth bunds created as a barrier between the track and homes. Barnsley Council confirmed it had received an application for the site, which would be restricted to a maximum of 20 vehicles under the scheme.
