A German project could result in bikes and cars passing information to one another about road conditions and warn of jams and accidents.

According to Dr Anselm Blocher - a researcher at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence who is co-ordinating the SmartWeb project – a wheel slipping on the road even though the temperature was not low enough for frost or ice would suggest oil or another slippery substance was present.

Once the danger was detected, information would be passed on by wireless network to approaching vehicles by means of a dashboard display or headset.

The system will also recognise how busy the rider is. If the rider is executing manoeuvres, such as leaning into a corner, the system will not use a blaring alarm to warn them of the upcoming oil patch, but might generate a warning on the dashboard of the bike or mark the danger point on a digital map.

Drivers and riders could also ask the SmartWeb system for information about traffic jams, speed traps and parking availability.
