I was an Arethusa boy in 1945 at the age of 13. Left in 1946 due to illness. ( later joined the RN at 15).
Memories: The trauma of the first night in a hammock - the fire drills in the middle of the night - boxing - football - being a drummer in the band - cold showers - the reluctance to answer a call of nature during the night owing to the rats having possession of the 'heads' - being confirmed by the Bishop of Rochester - dancing the hornpipe in London - boys showing off their weals after receiving 'cuts' - fair instructors and no bullying. Most of all the sounds and sights of the ship itself left a lasting impression on a young town boy.
