Re:Variations of the surname Groom.

I have documents from the 1800's that spell it with and without "s". My Grandfather, Edwin Houston Groom, son of William Council Groom, Grandson of Francis Council Groom, told me that there were several spellings of the name, including Croom. He also said that he doubted that the Croom s would claim the Groom s as kin, even though there are some buried in the same cemetery near my home. (Leon and Jefferson Counties, Florida.)According to him, the Crooms came to Florida early from the Carolinas and had the resources to acquire the best lands. (i.e. the Redhill areas of North Florida.) By the time the Groom s arrived here (after statehood in 1845) all that was left was the "flatwoods" i.e. coastal plains areas. They had to resort to tending the feral cattle and hogs left by the Spanish in he "flatwoods".
