Hi I've been looking at moving to Saltdean/Rottingdean and wanting to rent privatly a 4 bed home, does anyone know any landlords with this kind of property?

What are the local primary schools and pre schools like as I have twins who will be starting school next September and a younger son?

Is it a nice community and safe?

Love to hear from you

thanks Jo

At a time when a lot of the surface of Longridge Avenue, and many other roads in East Saltdean, is in a pitiful state, does anybody know why money is being lavished on the renewal of the coast road pavement, along which very few people actually walk?

Is it to curry favour, or does someone with 'pull' now live in one of the properties fronting the A259?

Was looking for some honest critic on the suitabilty of the area for thirty somethings and any recommendations of the different areas of Saltdean and where would be a preferable place to look. We have been looking at a few properties around Lenham Road East, any info would be great!!! Thankyou!

Hi all

I'm looking to move into a house opposite the entrance to the Oval car park by the lido. Having read some of the postings on this site, I'm becoming concerned that I've chosen Piccadilly Circus! I have an active 5-year-old, I like to open my windows now and again and so I would be very grateful if people could give me an honest view of how busy/noisy this car park gets, and when (I'm not too concerned about weekdays; it's evenings and weekends that woudl be more of a problem).

Many thanks

Hi there! I am posting this from Italy (I'm Italian and I live some 25 kms North of Milan). I used to come to Saltdean in the 80's as an exchange student (we went to school in the nearby Rottingdean) and I am planning to come back to refresh my memory and go back in time this coming March. It will be just a quick daily trip from London, also including a visit to Brighton. I remember we used to get on a bus (they were green at that time, if I remember well) to go back and forth from Brighton, leaving from the lower end of Saltdean's main street (somewhere near the pool and/or the park). Can anybody help me with bus information to and from Brighton railroad station? Any ideas on cab fares? Your help will be appreciated. Thanx. Ciao from Italia.

Subject: Planning Application Saltdean Barn

Author:
Glenys Revell (Concerned)
[Edit]

Date Posted: 07:01:17 09/02/08 Tue

Due to lack of public consultation documents being displayed and only 12 residents of Arundel Drive West were issued with consultation documents, this means that not only myself but many other residents could be unaware of exactly what kind of impact this development will have on the Oval Park, the overall look of the Barn and the dwindling amenities of public properties. I am concerned about the Grade 2 listed walled garden which could be lost forever. Also since the advent of Boomerang Kids in the barn there has been a enormous and steady increase in traffic and parked vehicles, many of which are sessional and come and go all day long making the safety of our children questionable. Should this planning application be granted, the traffic would at lease double in intensity and whilst it is maintained that children are transported in a 6 berth buggy at peak times and it is also intimated on the planning application documents that parking is available to the south of the development which gives one the impression that this parking is within easy access of the barn. This car park is the only public car park in Saltdean and serves the Library, the Lido, the Health Club, the Beach, the south of the park and one or two commercial properties such as estate agents and doctors’ surgery not to mention shops in Longridge and Lustrells. I have been here for 17 years and I know of very few parents who would make the journey from the south car park in say, pouring rain, howling gales or snow.

Having run Revell's Terrapin Nursery in the Terrapin Hut in the park for approximately 17 years, I am well aware of how the parking by parents can impact on the local residents and users of the park. Over the years we have endeavoured to ensure our parents park considerately as do our staff and we have had no complaints from local residents. We have an average of 15 children per day but these arrive in the morning and do not generally leave until the evening, therefore parking problems do not arise throughout the day. In addition to this, 7 of these families arrive on foot as they live very locally and are considerate of the problems transport can cause.

Boomerang is currently registered for 30 children at any given time ranging from 2 to 8 years and these are sessional places which means that children and parents are coming and going all day long as there can be as many as 3 variants per day leading to a possible 90 children per day coming and going. This prognosis will be doubled if planning consent is achieved and added to this is the number of staff - currently 14 - increasing by more than double because the new extension would cater for babies and the ratios as prescribed by Ofsted are 1 staff to 3 babies.

In summing up, do the residents of Saltdean really want their public land to disappear under the over extension of a nursery which does not offer services community wide. This beautiful barn should be able to be accessed by more than just the very young and once planning consent is granted and mortgages arranged, it would be very difficult for this building to be used for any other purposes.

I have also heard that plans are afoot to close St. Martin's playgroup, which is run by Boomerang, once planning consent is gained and I believe that there is a 100 place Nursery opening in the old Ocean Hotel so how can this planning be justified on the grounds that there are not enough nursery spaces locally. I personally have places available, I also understand St. Nicholas have vacancies.

If you would like to make comment to the council about this development you need to be quick and send your comments to Kate Brocklebank at planning.applications@brighton-hove.gov.uk by 3rd September. Please do not be complacent as this could affect the future of the park and the barn.

Can I avoid controversy and merely use this opportunity to raise a bit of publicity.

The Saltdean Residents Association is holding a Car Boot Sale at The Dell this Sunday 21st September. Sellers from 7am. Cars £7.00, Vans £10.00. Buyers from 8am. All Welcome.

Most of any money raised by the SRA goes to local organisations. For example last year £1000 went to Saltdean United Football Club, £91 to West Saltdean Local Action Team, £371 to Ambulance Responder Team, £200 to Saltdean Primary School, £20 to Royal British Legion.

So come along and support us.

After experiencing the lack of quality environments for our children to be cared for in Saltdean any parent would welcome the first class facilities that are available at Boomerang Kids, I have first hand of both sights, if you have any doubt of the excellence that is provided at the Barn I am sure that they would be very happy to show you around as I am sure Terrapins would also then you can make your own decisions.

In these times where the majority of parents work and even if they don't it is clear that a certain standard is expected to prepare our children for school and not to collect their children unexpectedly early to find them watching TV.
This is certainly not what I would expect from a good nursery but exactly what I found when I collected my child from Terrapins.

This is intended to be a dispute regarding planning I hear you say but I feel that it more a dispute defending business and not in the interest of the local community at all, So we all know what we are dealing with here, Terrapins was approached to consider selling their land for the extension and funnily enough they agreed! For the princely sum of £40’000 for land/lease that didn’t belong to them /had expired over TEN years ago, so I leave it to you to make your own minds up regarding the intentions of this notice on our community website!

Yours sincerely
A concerned mother

Well how childish is this getting!? I do believe that Saltdean Residents is open to anyone living or working in Saltdean.. If Glynes is so concerned about Saltdean, as implyed in her post, then why has she not taken the time to become a member and voice her concerns properly rather than on a 'blog'?? It seems a shame that the Boomerang manager and deputy are being condemed for using their free time to get opinions and hear concerns officially from the residents of Saltdean. Surely this is not a bad thing?!

Any other planning application does NOT require such a thorough consultation as Boomerang has decided to take. It seems a shame that people who obviously don't fully understand the system comment as if they know what they are talking about!

Isn't Boomerang Kids a charity and Revells a private operation? Charity run groups have to follow strict guidelines.. is this the case for private nurseries? How come the doctors have to renew their temporary planning permission every couple of years, but Revells don't appear to have done this? ever?

In all fairness using the holiday club at Boomerang my young children watched films in the afternoon there. Also why was the only consultation on the document done via Saltdean Residents Association when Boomerang's manager and deputy manager are both on the committee - a case of greasing their own palms. The Residents association should be ashamed of themselves. Poor show.

I understand that work on the Ocean Hotel redevelopment has pretty much ground to a halt. It seems as though with the slowdown in the market they are struggling to find anyone willing to part with £200K + for a 1 bedroom flat and anything upto £550K + for a 3 bedroom flat.

Now that the slowdown has well and truly hit, and the positive equity bubble that everyone lived in for so long has burst - although 99% of people are no worse off as we are still in our homes, what has been brought home however is the absolute ludicrous prices people were expected to pay for redeveloped/new properties. £550K ++ extra for a parking space for a 3 bed flat in Saltdean and trying to flog 270 of these !!!! as usual developers and investors were living in a greedy fools paradise which we now all have to pay the price for.

The question is now, how long will it be before the flats are finished and we no longer have the current eyesore of concrete skeletons.

The rumours have been rife for many years, but as a resident of over 20 years I've kept an open mind. That is until last week when I saw two young men fighting on the road outside, observed by what looked like over 25 people. As I approached the gathering crowd, I asked if the police had been called. The answer to my question was short and right to the point. "They are the last thing we need round here poking their noses in". I stayed for what turned out to be a pleasant and reasonably priced pint of bitter. But I will not be returning to this public house. Not after being offered cocaine by two men in the toilets.

On to Bevendean Ave and the section with the low house numbers is also closed. Now the workmen didn't mind waking us up last Sunday at 8.00 by drilling (I'm sure thats illegal but who were they?) then they left the site unmanned for several days. The road is apparently still closed although most of the signs have been blown or knocked down. Anyone who has the guts to do so drives on the pavement to avoid this minor bit of road works. Does anyone know what this is about?

On Friday 25th January at 11am, Healthwalks are launching a 3.5 mile undercliff walk from Saltdean to Ovingdean and back again.

Healthwalks are a relaxed and friendly way to get some gentle, but effective exercise. All walks will have two walk leaders to support and encourage those who join us.

Healthwalks are also free - all our walk leaders are trained volunteers. There is no need to book, you just turn up. For this walk, some people may wish to leave the walk at Ovingdean and make their own way home.

I am trying to get this information out to various community centres and community groups, but the main websites list telephone numbers only and I have posters, flyers and leaflets that I would like to distribute.

Can anyone help me with the addresses of community groups in Saltdean, Rottingdean and Ovingdean that might be able to display promotion materials.

An uncomfortable thought occured to me the other day, since all new developments must contain a proportion of homes set aside for subsidised (council) housing, and given the size of the Butlins development there will consequently be a high number of such properties within.

Surely such a concentration of low income dwellings should be situated on the other side of Longridge Ave in East Saltdean under the care of Lewis Council?

I welcome your thoughts.

Can anyone help.....

here is an email I recieved from

Anthony McIntosh
PMSA / UoB National Recording Project - Sussex
School of Historical and Critical Studies
University of Brighton

I am a Researcher at the University of Brighton working on the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association's National Recording Project for Sussex.

The project aims to survey, photograph and record the details of the diverse range of monuments and sculpture throughout the county of Sussex. The database will eventually be fully accessible online and a volume of the Liverpool University Press books 'Public Sculpture of Britain' will be produced for Sussex. I wonder if it would be possible to ask your readers through your web pages if anyone has a photograph of the inscriptions that were on the weather vane on the cliffs at East Saltdean.

They are now completely illegible and I can find no record of them. I understand that there was an inscription regarding the anniversary of the second world war and a later one regarding the death of Princess Diana?

Any help you may be able to provide would be most apreciated - email me here if you like.

Has anyone heard about any organised protest regarding the council’s ridiculous bus lane proposals.

I understand that they want to make 1 lane from the St Dunstans roundabout a bus lane extending to Telescombe. The traffic is already horrendous going into Rottingdean without this.

We will have to queue single file back towards the Marina whilst a lane is empty except 1 bus every 5/10 minutes! What is the possible benefit except the odd bus may get from Ovingdean to Rottingdean 30 seconds quicker but then will join the rest of us in the Rottingdean bottle neck.

I also hear that heading West after the Ovingdean rounabout is going to be reduced to 40 mph.

The coast road is bad enough without these plans...prepare for traffic jams every night and 20 minutes extra on a journey time just to keep a bus company happy that is subsidised by us the tax payer.

I am a post graduate student researching for a Master of Arts dissertation on the wedding day experience. I would be very interested to hear from ladies who had their wedding in the 1940s and 1950s and who would kindly share their stories with me for the purpose of my research.

On at least two maybe three occasions in the last 2 weeks the police have been seen racing across saltdean park searching desperately for somebody.

Also parents at saltdean school have been complaining about a person loitering around the school staring at the children. It appears that this is the same person who the police were searching for.

Apparently it is a man who drives a red sports car possibly a red MG who was sat staring at the children. According to certain sources this person is a paedophile, also even more frightening is that there are meant to be a few more actually living in Saltdean. What their status is I don't know, what I mean by this is are they on an offenders list that residents can access to protect their children ? I don't know.

So this is a warning to all parents to be careful and also to anyone with evil intentions, we are looking out for you.

This site can sometimes be a bit of a giggle to wind people up, but in actual fact this type of community information is what this site is great for. Does anyone know of information that can be accessed through the police or local councils to legitimately identify these individuals ? I would certainly like to know more.

It often shocks me that such people can be allowed to live near children without being clearly identified, I would much rather sacrifice the civil liberties of these people rather than the lives of our most precious things - our children.

Having met my wife at the Ocean Hotel almost 20 years ago, Saltdean holds a special place in our hearts. Does anybody know of which developers are working on the site as I would be very interested to find out about buying one of the appartments. The only information that I have been able to collect is about the achitects & they won't tell me whose actually developing the buildings!!

Hello Everyone,

I was walking down the beach with my husband last night around 10pm when we both noticed a small group of people chanting what sounded like incantations. As we looked up, one of them came towards us shouting profanities, and amongst what we thought we heard were the words "in the name of Satan". As this man came nearer, my husband asked him what all this was about. the man then reply that this was part of a ceremony dedicated to Aleister Crowley and Alex Sanders who lived here in the start of the century, and that we had better get used to seeing them as more satanic groups around the country have elected Saltdean as the new "Lewes".

Has anyone seen anything like this before?
if so, what can we do to stop them using our peaceful beach for their unchristian and devilish acts?

Hi everybody.

Those T mobile people are appealing the turned down application for the phone mast we appealed against (see this site's front page "Stop Press" for more details) in March 2007.

I for one am extremely worried that they will be granted permission and wonder what your reactions are. Does anyone want to meet up as a small group and thrash out some ideas on how we can best approach this as local residents?

Just to remind people that 'further comments' about the proposed erection of an 8.5m phone mast intended for thhe jct of Saltdean Vale and Hempstead Road in Saltdean need to be made to:
The Planning Inspectorate,
Room 320(E),
Temple Quay House
2, The Square,
Temple Quay,
Bristol,
BS1 6PN

Your thoughts and ideas are welcome,

Best Wishes,

Stephanie Jones
